Although no NBA city is ideal, Salt Lake City is the only one that routinely appears to cause problems between athletes and fans. The Utah Jazz have been there for more than four decades, yet during that period, there has been a recurring theme of players complaining about the fan base’s behavior. Even Donovan Mitchell is a part of that list.
The All-Star point guard, Donovan Mitchell played his first five seasons of professional basketball in Utah, but now that he is playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers, he’s speaking out against how Utah fans treated him there.
Before the front staff ultimately opted to end his five-year run as the team’s main player. Spida gave his all to this organization. The 26-year-old has many happy memories from his illustrious time with the Jazz. And, it is obvious that he is quite appreciative of the Utah Jazz fans that supported him throughout that time.
There is, however, a very dark aspect to this for Donovan Mitchell, as he freely admits. The Cavaliers guard recently spoke candidly with Marc J. Spears of Andscape about his tenure with the Jazz, revealing that despite their affection and support, the Utah community also proved to be one of the hardest things for him to deal with.
“It’s a little comforting for me, 100%,” Mitchell said. “I’m not going to lie about that. It’s no secret there’s a lot of stuff that I dealt with being in Utah off the floor… If I’m being honest with you, I never really said this, but it was draining.”
Numerous racist remarks were made throughout his five-year term, and they also had negative effects. Donovan, for instance, had to learn about Black history, according to State Senator Stuart Adams.

Donovan Mitchell remembers the special moments he experienced at Utah
The former Jazz player does not think that his No. 45 jersey deserves to be at Vivint Arena and hung in the rafters despite his influence. From the time he joined the Jazz as the 13th overall choice in the NBA draft in 2017 through the 2021–2022 season, Mitchell was a standout player. Over the course of five seasons, he averaged 23.9 points, 2.8 made 3-pointers, 4.5 assists, and 1.3 steals. The attention on Mitchell’s connection with former Jazz center Rudy Gobert was one of the major difficulties he faced while playing with the Jazz.
Mitchell is unable to deny that the shift in environment is quite apparent now that he is in a mostly Black community in Cleveland. This has been a nice contrast from the Utah community’s framework. Where the fans are largely white, according to the three-time All-Star.
