Donovan Mitchell drops 44 in vain as Cavs suffer a gut-wrenching defeat against the Jazz
Donovan Mitchell
The Donovan Mitchell-led Cleveland Cavaliers‘ five-game road journey resumed tonight with their latest visit to Salt Lake City to play the Utah Jazz. The Cavaliers arrived in Salt Lake City with a lot of confidence after a convincing victory over the Phoenix Suns on Sunday night. Salt Lake City is often regarded as one of the NBA’s most difficult cities to play in.
For Jazz fans, it was a unique game because it was Mitchell’s first time playing on the court at Vivint Arena as an opponent. The Utah Jazz looked forward to welcoming their former jazzman. Jazz owner Ryan smith speaking on Mitchell said, “Once a Jazzman, always a Jazzman. We honor the amazing five seasons Donovan gave the Jazz and the incredible contributions he made to the Utah community.
He further added,” He will always be part of the Jazz’s legacy, even when he is wearing another jersey as our competitor. I look forward to seeing every fan join me in a standing ovation as Donovan returns to Utah for the first time of many over the course of his career.” Donovan Mitchell did not fail to impress even as his team went down fighting against their hosts Jazz. Mitchell delivered another MVP-worthy performance.
The former Utah player had 46 points on 51.9% shooting along with 4 rebounds and 6 assists for the Cavaliers. By the game ended, Mitchell scored or assisted on 59 points for Cleveland, who scored 114 total.
Cavs lose despite Valiant efforts from Donovan Mitchell
Donovan Mitchell exploding in a Jazz victory on Tuesday night gave Utah Jazz fans a sight they were accustomed to. The star of the Cleveland Cavaliers scored 46 points, handed out six assists, and committed no turnovers in his welcome back to Vivint Arena, but the Jazz prevailed 116-114 thanks to a big performance by Jordan Clarkson late in the game.
A back-and-forth matchup ensued, with the Cavaliers grabbing a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter after Mitchell’s individual 10-0 run and the Jazz leading by double digits in the third. With three minutes left, Cleveland should have won the game after taking a five-point lead. Clarkson then decided to take the matter into his own hands. The former NBA Sixth Man of the Year scored nine points in a row to give Utah a big advantage they wouldn’t relinquish.
Clarkson ended the game with 32 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Markkanen, the outstanding player for whom he was traded, also performed admirably, scoring 25 points and grabbing 16 rebounds.
The victory raises the Jazz’s record to 21-23, which is still far better than preseason projections for a group that dealt Mitchell and Rudy Gobert. Whereas the Cavs continue to hold the 4th position in the Eastern Conference. For Jazz supporters, it was pretty much the ideal night since they got to witness their former star while also demonstrating that their team was still competitive without him.
