Free Agent Donte DiVincenzo Signs with Golden State Warriors
Golden State Warriors is the top “spending” franchise in terms of salaries, as they dished out just above $171,000,000 Salary last season. But it brought them their 4th NBA Championship in the last 8 seasons and now that they are at the bottom of Cap-space, they are moving their rotational players around in order to challenge for championship next season again. They lost 5 of their rotational players – Garry Payton II (Portland), F Juan Toscano-Anderson (LA Lakers), Damion Lee (Suns), Otto Porter (Raptors), and center Bjilica (undisclosed) in 1st few days of free agency. But the intent was to maintain some depth in the squad, adding free-agent guard Donte DiVincenzo. The Golden State Warriors have agreed to a two-year, $9.3 million contract, sources told The Athletic on Friday.
The deal includes a player option for the second year. Given the Warriors’ cap situation and the numbers reported by Charania, it appears the club will use a portion of its taxpayer mid-level exception to complete the signing.
DiVincenzo became an unrestricted free agent when the Sacramento Kings declined to make him a qualifying offer. The Kings acquired the 25-year-old former Milwaukee guard as part of a 2022 multi-team trade.
Can Donte DiVincenzo fill in the void for the Golden State Warriors?
Golden State Warriors are currently enjoying their Golden Era in NBA. They managed 6 final appearances and won 4 NBA Championships in the last 8 seasons. Their veteran stars are still in their prime but had a very potent and deep roaster to support in the regular season. Though they have lost 5 of their important player in 2023 preseason free agency, the Warriors have managed to keep hold of their influential stars.
New recruit Donte emerged as the Bucks’ starting shooting guard in 2020-21, averaging 10.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game while shooting 37.9 percent from 3-point range. His production declined last season as he recovered from offseason ankle surgery.
The age factors suit the Warriors, who were looking to add a secondary ball-handler in 2nd team gameplay. The Warriors lost out on free-agent guard Gary Payton II but replaced him with another guard, maybe not of equivalent quality though. But Warriors’ gameplay, culture, and coaching staff had shown in the past that they can develop an average player into a prospect star.
DiVincenzo was a full-time starter on the Bucks team that won a championship in 2020/21, averaging 10.4 PPG, 5.8 RPG, and 3.1 APG on .420/.379/.718 shooting in 66 games (27.5 MPG) during that regular season. This could be a great production in a rather star-studded Milwaukee team.
At his best, DiVincenzo has proved to be a solid role player in the NBA. After a series of injuries keeping Donte out of action, the Warriors are banking on getting the healthy version of DiVincenzo going forward. He’s still young enough that no one should draw any major conclusions from last season, especially considering he played in a situation with the Kings that already had a rough 2022 season.
After the addition of Donte, Golden State Warriors would also be going through some free agent profiles to make as much possible efforts to keep hold of their dominance in the league. They will be focusing on the Forwards position to bring depth in that area.
