Draymond Green makes Mavs owner Mark Cuban settle debate between Luka Doncic and Dirk Nowitzki

Dirk Nowitzki and Luka Doncic

Luka Doncic and Dirk Nowitzki are two of the NBA’s best European imports, and they have both played their part in the history of the Dallas Mavericks franchise. Current minority owner Mark Cuban was asked to choose between the two as the greatest Mavericks player ever when he recently appeared on Draymond Green’s podcast.

Mark Cuban, who sold his majority stake in the Mavs, knows a lot about the two players, as it was under his leadership that both players were acquired. However, he was given the difficult decision to choose between the two, and to Draymond Green’s surprise, he went with Luka Doncic

Yes. No disrespect to Dirk; he knows I love him to death. Dirty and I go way, way back, but Dirk will be the first one to tell you that Luka is better.

Cuban’s choice was surprising as Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavs to their last NBA title in 2011. In contrast, Doncic’s best effort at a title was taking the team to the 2022 NBA Playoffs, where they succumbed to the might of eventual champions, the Golden State Warriors, at the Western Conference Finals.

However, Doncic still has time to match up with the incredible Dirk Nowitzki, who had a respectable 21 years with the franchise. With the deadliest duo in the league, it’s only a matter of time before team Doncic can proudly say he is the greatest Mavs player ever.

Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd likes Luka Doncic to Picasso

While current Dallas minority stake owner Mark Cuban believes Doncic is the greatest Mavs player over NBA title winner Dirk Nowitzki, Head Coach Jason Kidd joined the train to shower praises on the league’s current leading scorer. After Doncic pulled off the magical scoop shot in the win against the Houston Rockets, for his brilliant effort, Coach Kidd referred to the Slovenian as Picasso

We've been lucky enough to be around him for three years. We've seen him kick the ball in, shoot from half-court and full-court, and sitting in a chair. To see him do that, I think a lot of people got excited but I think that's Luka. He's always able to make tough shots. Picasso when you give him the paintbrush, he's going to do something special, and that shot was special.

He was arguably the best player on the court, dazzling and setting the arena alight with his stellar performance. No wonder his coach believes he is as unique as the legendary Picasso.

Although his performance this season has not been able to sway voters, no one can argue that he is having the best season in his career. If he can change the Mavs’ fortunes from now till the season ends, then hopefully he can change the minds of his critics and prove his artistry to them.
