This off-season was full of blockbuster trades. While many teams made big moves, one of the biggest and most surprising was the Golden State Warriors trading for star point guard Chris Paul. Paul, an NBA veteran, was originally traded from the Phoenix Suns to the Washington Wizards. Then, the Warriors re-routed him to San Francisco.
It was quite a surprising move considering that there has often been animosity between Paul and the Warriors. Indeed, Draymond Green spoke out about the way Paul plays. He said that he didn’t know Paul outside of the basketball court and only knew him from what he saw on the court. Green said that he and Paul were quite alike in their on-court persona in the way that they were both pricks.
He was quoted saying, “I didn’t know Chris [Paul] at all outside of competing with him. If you’ve ever watched Chris compete, he’s kind of an a*shole. You may say the same thing about me.”
Paul, who has been one of the NBA’s star point guards for many years, will find himself playing second fiddle for perhaps the first time in his career. Hopefully, for Paul, this move can help bring him the ring he has long chased after. In his entire NBA career, the closest Paul has come to winning a ring was during his tenure with the Phoenix Suns when he reached the NBA finals in 2021. He eventually lost to the Bucks, however, and he will be looking to win it all this season.
What happened in the Chris Paul trade?
While Chris Paul’s trade wasn’t inherently a 3-team trade, its outcome resembled one. Initially, Paul was traded from the Phoenix Suns to the Washington Wizards in a trade that sent Bradley Beal to Phoenix.
Then, the Warriors traded for Paul, in a trade that sent Jordan Poole to the Wizards. Paul, now in his 18th NBA season will be playing for his 6th team. The Warriors have acquired a reliable veteran who will help lead their youngsters.
While many are happy to have Paul with the Warriors, a few consider the wisdom of this decision. While Paul is an excellent guard, his addition does nothing to improve the Warriors defense inside the paint. The Warriors are woefully undersized. This is a huge disadvantage when playing against teams like the Lakers that have powerful centers. How the Warriors work around this is to be seen when the regular season starts.
