LeBron James was linked to a few potential exit strategies before the trade deadline this year. There were reports of him wanting a trade out of the Los Angeles Lakers in case they could not strengthen the roster. Reports were linking him to several teams. However, one team flew under the radar. It was the Golden State Warriors. More specifically, their star Draymond Green who is good friends with LeBron James, asked him to join the Warriors.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Ramona Shelburne documented that the Golden State Warriors had made calls to Lakers owner Jeanie Buss about a potential trade for James. Buss deferred the call to James’ agent Rich Paul who made it clear that James had no intention of leaving Los Angeles. This led Draymond Green to call up Rich Paul who is also his agent, and ask him to convince James to join the Warriors. This has not sat well with basketball fans.
The Warriors saw LeBron James playing at an elite level even at age 39 and thought his addition would extend their championship window. Draymond Green would like nothing less than his close friend to join the Warriors and win championships together. James would have fit into their scheme well too.
As the primary ball handler, James would help Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson play off the ball. Something that has been the recipe for success throughout their career. The Warriors with James would also have been significantly better at rebounds and points in the paint. This would help Green to hold his fort under the rim.
