“They paid Anthony Davis all that money,” Dwight Howard fires blatant shot at Lakers, big man after justifying his true worth
Anthony Davis and Dwight Howard
Dwight Howard was one of the crucial pieces on the Los Angeles Lakers roster when they won their 17th NBA Championship in 2020. Quickly, Howard was traded from the Lakers but eventually, the big man came back to the lineup. However, this time it was different, as the Lakers could not capitalize on the big man’s length last season. In a recent interview, Howard said that he got fewer minutes on the court and was paid less because of the money paid to Anthony Davis.
Howard said that the Lakers did not give him enough minutes on the court but expected him to put in monster numbers. The 3 x Defensive Player of the Year said that he got minimal minutes every quarter and yet his team expected maximum output. Speaking about his rebounds, Howard said, “I play 2 minutes in the 1st quarter, 2 minutes in the 2nd quarter, 2 minutes in the 3rd…then 3 minutes in the 4th quarter.”
According to the former Orlando Magic superstar, expecting a player to grab 15 rebounds despite minimal minutes is illogical. Howard remarked, “Do you expect somebody to average 15 rebounds if they playing 2 minutes a quarter?” But when asked why did he get only a few minutes on the court, Dwight said, “They paid Anthony Davis all that money to play at that position.”
Comedian asks Dwight Howard if he had a fight with Anthony Davis because of the money
In the Interview, the Julius Randle look-alike comedian hilariously trolled Howard for his pay grade statement. He asked Dwight if he got into a fight with Davis on the bench because of money. “Is that why you got into a fight on the bench?” he asked. However, the NBA champion played down the narrative and said that “it was just a disagreement.”
After winning the championship with the Lakers in 2020, Davis signed a maximum contract with the Lakers. He signed a five-year, $189.9 million veteran max extension at 30% of the salary cap. Here is Anthony Davis’ salary breakdown.
2020-21 | $37,742,000 |
2021-22 | $35,361,360 |
2022-23 | $37,980,720 |
2023-24 | $40,600,080 |
2024-25 | $43,219,440 (player option) |
Perhaps, the eligibility of max extension for Davis would not get wider validation now, watching the frequency of his injury. He has been mostly injured and out of the lineup for the past two seasons, which has cost the Lakers their playoff spot. He is out of the lineup again with a foot strain injury. It’s not that a player of Davis’ caliber does not deserve such an extension, but Davis also has to prove his worth on a consistent basis.
