The FIBA World Cup group stages have kicked off this week after the tune-up games wrapped up. A record 55 NBA players are representing their nations this year, from the likes of Karl Anthony-Towns to Luka Doncic. Included in this group is Minnesota Timberwolves star Rudy Gobert. He plays for the French national team. The French were considered favorites going into the group stages, having won a strong six out of seven tune-up games.

Unfortunately for French supporters, the team crashed out of the World Cup horrendously. France lost its first group-stage match to Canada, getting blown out by 30 points. The team then went on to lose the next game to Latvia by two points, officially eliminating them from contention. Gobert, a three-time All-Star, was supposed to lead his team. He virtually disappeared against Latvia, scoring only nine points, attempting just one field goal, and committing four fouls in 26 minutes.

This elimination came as a shock to everyone as France were ranked No. 5 in the world according to FIBA. They were considered heavy contenders for the gold medal and were expected to make a deep playoff run at the very least. France have a pointless game against Lebanon on the 29 August and will only be competing for the 17th–32nd position now. This is especially embarrassing for the French, considering that they will be hosting the Olympics in Paris next year.

Gobert, Evan Fournier, and Nicolas Batum were among the active NBA players present in the French Roster. Batum a 34-year-old veteran expressed his grief during a post-game interview with beIN Sports. Translated from French, Batum stated, “Everyone must question themselves: coaches, players, federation.” He added, “We need the best team in France possible (in Paris). I messed up my last World Cup. It really pisses me off.”

The French may have some hope on the horizon, as phenom Victor Wembanyama is expected to join the squad for the Olympics. Wembanyama the No.1 pick in the 2023 draft had missed out on the World Cup in preparation for the upcoming NBA season. He is expected to be a star in the league and is already the face of the San Antonio Spurs. Wembanyama looks ideally placed to grow and expand upon his skillset as he has been placed in the hands of the legendary coach Gregg Popovich.

After the surprise exit of the French national team from the FIBA World Cup, NBA fans wasted no time and took to social media in order to bash the squad. They even targeted Rudy Gobert as he was expected to be the ringleader on the team, and help them achieve their goal of taking home the gold medal for France.
