Gilbert Arenas is once again back in the NBA headlines. And, the reason is another interesting take of his. But this time on the receiving end is Klay Thompson and his future with the Golden State Warriors. The Dubs already have a lot to sort out and deal with this offseason. As they are about to make many tough decisions with respect to the future of the franchise and some key pieces.
Klay Thompson’s future with the Golden State Warriors is one of those many decisions. The 4×NBA Champ will be entering the final year of his contract worth $43,219,440. And, now he’ll be looking to get himself a well-deserved bag with a multi-year max extension contract. But honestly, the Golden State Warriors are in no such position to willingly give him the well-deserved bag.
As the franchise has already paid some of the younger players and soon will be looking to extend the rest of the core to keep rolling ahead. Before Klay Thompson’s future, they also have to make decisions around Draymond Green as even he’s in the same boat as Klay Thompson but just with a player option. The dynasty days are also almost done and now the organization has to start thinking about their future if they want to be around the contention.
Gilbert Arenas recently on his podcast, “No Chill” gave out the Golden State Warriors front office a suggestion. And, unfortunately, his suggestion was to not give Klay Thompson an automatic extension. Instead, test his value in the market. As Gilbert Arenas quoted: “I’m not going to give him an extension. I’m going to let him play the year out … I want to see what his value is in the open market. …It’s an a—hole move, but sometimes you just got to be the a—hole. Whatever he gets in the open market, I would try to match, but I would want to see what the value is versus just automatically giving him an extension.”
Can the Golden State Warriors retain Klay Thompson during the next summer?
The only way Klay Thompson and the Golden State Warriors can stick around is with Klay Thompson taking a pay cut on his next contract. He already has been through two career-ending injuries but bounced back and proved his worth.
Also, he’s a big reason behind the franchise’s successful championship run. And, we all know how loyal he’s to the Dub Nation. So he surely deserves a bag.
But with the situation around the franchise Klay Thompson might have to take a pay cut if he wants to don the same Dubs jersey. Also, many around the league believe there’s no need for him to do so and he can easily get the well-deserved bag by any other franchise in the league. The bag, experience, and splashing skills he has are really great.
