In a sports world where old grudges rarely die, the Isiah Thomas and Michael Jordan rivalry appears to have resurfaced. Recently, Thomas reignited the controversy during his appearance on the Cedric Maxwell Podcast, where he made controversial remarks about the NBA legend, Michael Jordan.
The rivalry’s roots go deep, stemming from the highly physical battles between the Detroit Pistons and the Chicago Bulls during their prime. The “Bad Boys” era of the Pistons is mainly remembered for its aggressive playstyle, which often had Jordan at its receiving end. The Pistons’ physical strategy successfully stalled the Bulls’ championship aspirations for a while.
“Every time you hit him, he was crying,” Thomas said on the podcast. “Going to David Stern’s office, going to the Commissioner’s office, having a meeting about getting hit, getting fouled, you gotta change the rules. I’m like, ‘Wait a minute. I watched Dr. J get beat up. I watched Magic get beat up. I watched Max get beat up. I watched Bird get beat up. I done got beat up. Everybody get beat up but wait a minute. Now we gotta change the rules because he get hit.”
On the other hand, the renowned Netflix documentary “The Last Dance” presents a different perspective. Jordan acknowledged the Pistons’ dominance, “They made it personal. They physically beat the s**t out of us.”
Jordan significantly changed his physique to counter the Pistons’ aggressiveness, which ultimately helped the Bulls defeat the Pistons in the 1991 Eastern Conference Finals, starting the Bulls’ dynasty.
