“No way in hell this dude was going to leave $30 million” Jay Williams calls out Kyrie Irving’s bluff with Brooklyn Nets
Kyrie Irving left the world in state of frenzy after constantly rumoring that he was looking for a trade out of the Brooklyn Nets. The Nets signed him on a four-year $135 million contract three years ago. Since then, the team has not made it past the first-round of the playoffs due to injuries and issues regarding to player availability.
According to Brian Windhorst, “Joe Tsai does not want a repeat of last season, and Joe Tsai is the person driving this. You can be assured that the moves that they’re making come from the ownership.” The organization had a miserable run without Kyrie by their side throughout the regular season. This had them in a very rough spot for a good amount of time following the season.
Kyrie Irving agrees to a one year deal with the Brooklyn Nets
Kyrie Irving took a very long time to come to terms with the offers he was proposed by the Nets. In a tweet, NBA reporter Shams Charania revealed that Irving had agreed to a one-year $36.5 million player contract. The player was not expecting less than a four-year extension from the team, but the front office was willing to agree to it due to his reliability.
The former champion only started in 29 games this season after being banned from playing due to his stance on the vaccination mandate put forth by the State of New York. He averaged 27.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 5.8 assists per game this season. The Los Angeles Lakers was the only franchise visibly interested in acquiring in exchange for Russell Westbrook. But this meant that he would have had to let go of $36 million and settle for $6 million instead.
Jay Williams calls Kyrie Irving’s antics a business negotiation gimmick
After Kyrie Irving was announced to have signed his one-year deal, Jay Williams called him out of simply publicizing rumors in order to get a bigger contract from the Nets as he had no other team as a viable choice. “Kyrie Irving had no leverage on the market place guys, you and I talked about this, ninety-five percent of the teams that he had listed on his list didn’t have even cap space for it to even workout.”
“If you’re the Nets are you realistically going to take THT, Austin Reaves and try to get Russel Westbrook? All this stuff was built where at the end of the day, he was trying to secure a long-term deal with the Net but there’s no way in hell this dude was going to leave $30 million on the table by opting out.”
