Jaylen Brown clarifies controversial tweet on Black Hebrew Israelites defending Kyrie Irving

Members of the group: Israel United in Christ, Kyrie Irving and Jaylen Brown

Jaylen Brown has been a real one for Kyrie Irving throughout the Nets’ guard’s controversial stretch which even had him suspended. And, now once again they are back in the NBA headlines as Jaylen Brown didn’t step back from showing out his support for Kyrie Irving as he returned back to ball out with the Nets. But this time the Celtics guard got himself messed up and received a lot of backlash for a tweet from his end.

Jaylen Brown was an active supporter of Kyrie Irving since his controversial actions made their way to the headlines. He didn’t say anything hurting or wrong just backed up the talented guard whenever he felt like it. Kyrie Irving made his return to the Nets after deeply apologizing for his hurting actions and filling in the requirements, against the Memphis Grizzlies. He wasn’t around for eight games and had to live with the tag of being “anti-semitic” as he promoted a movie that was anti-semitic.

But now Kyrie Irving has cleared the dirt off his name and even Adam Silver and Joe Tsai have backed him up. But when he was about to ball out a group of Black Hebrew Israelites (more than 100 people) gathered outside the Barclays Center to show their support. They were from the group Israel United in Christ which has been identified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. And, that’s where Jaylen Brown got it all wrong.

Jaylen Brown messed up when he wrote “Energy” in a tweet which included the video of that group. The group was promoting antisemitism and handing out brochures that referred to the Jews as the “Synagogue of Satan.” As soon as Brown realized his mistake he tweeted out his clarification as he got some facts wrong and wasn’t actually aware of the group.

In the tweet, Jaylen wrote: “I was not aware of what specific group that was outside of Barclay’s Center tonight. I was celebrating the unification of our people welcoming the return of Kyrie to the court, first glance I thought it was a known fraternity the (C/Que’s) Omega psi phi (step’n) showing support”

People were very critical of Jaylen Brown’s tweet and he was about to end up in the same conversation as Kyrie Irving. But fortunately, he sent out a clarification via a tweet and got the things right. He has even given out a detailed clarification now. As before the game against the Bulls on Monday, he discussed the tweet and the story behind it with the reporters.

Jaylen Brown clarifying his tweet said: “I didn’t have my reading glasses on. I didn’t know who that group was. My instinct when I first saw that video was, I come from a community torn every day by systemic representation and imagery of violence in our community, so when I saw that video, it struck a chord for different reasons.”

Further clearing the dirt off his name Jaylen Brown added: “I saw a large group of people from our community showing support for (Kyrie) and his return, so me being proud of that support and being proud of our community for doing that does not mean I endorse or celebrate some of the things that were being done or being said.”

Then Jaylen Brown went on to explain how the support was for Kyrie and not the video and how everything said and done there isn’t represented by his end or tweet. As he told the reporters: “I didn’t notice which group it was. I just noticed the support, and that’s what I commented on, and I reemphasized that I don’t think that everything that’s being said or being done is something that I endorse or represent.”

Jaylen Brown also added how he wants his children to see more representations of color by Brown and Black people. He wants the community to be known for standing together on issues rather than being the violent group that the media depicts them to be. He has also decided to not delete that tweet as it’s purpose was to support Kyrie Irving and not the hate group.
