The game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics has lived up to the hype this season, every single time they have met on the court. The Saturday game between the championship leaders not only lived up to it but also dominated the news for the wrong reasons. Celtics star Jayson Tatum fouled LeBron James on a potential game-winning layup in the last second of the fourth quarter, which to his frustration officials bluntly missed. While the Laker players expressed their frustration, Tatum said the final part and the OT was completely blurred to him.

With over four seconds remaining in the fourth quarter and the game tied at 105-105. James took the inbound pass from Dennis Schroder on the top of the key. He did what he is best at. He drove hard to the basket to make the layup shot. At the basket, when he was about to bank the shot, Tatum hit his hand, denying the basket. Finding there was no foul call, the 4 x MVP started to jump in frustration calling for a foul on the play, which the refs paid no heed to.

In the postgame media interaction when a reporter asked Tatum if he fouled LeBron on the play. Smiling, Tatum told reporters that the last two minutes and the OT were blurred to his memory. “The last two minutes & overtime was a blur. I don’t really know what happened,” he said. “It happened so fast, but we have moved on and got the win,” he added.

Postgame social media was flooded with reactions from fans and the top sports media. Laker players and coaches were in utter disbelief and frustration after the game. After the game, head coach Darvin Ham told reporters that it was officiating mistake and it’s amazing how LeBron doesn’t get calls. “As much as you try not to put it on officiating, it’s becoming increasingly difficult… The best player in the NBA can’t get a call. It’s amazing,” Ham told reporters. Lakers guard Dennis Schroder called for slapping fines on referees for such calls. The Lakers have lost three potentially winning games because of the bad officiating by the refs, especially in the last seconds of the game. Lakers star Anthony Davis also reacted to the missed foul call on Tatum. “I guarantee you nothing’s going to happen to the ref. We got cheated tonight. It’s a blatant foul… The refs were bad tonight,” he said. Already among the bottom teams in the Western Conference, the Lakers need wins as much as they could, and unfortunate misses could only put their playoff chances in jeopardy.
