“I broke his scoring record in 1984, it bothered Wilt,” Kareem Abdul-Jabbar feels no JEALOUSY for being dethroned by LeBron James as all-time scoring leader
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar expresses how he does not feel jealous that LeBron James is about to break his all-time scoring record.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and LeBron James
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar recalls the time he broke the all-time scoring record as LeBron James inches closer to breaking it. He recollects that Wilt Chamberlain felt a sense of jealousy toward him. Kareem played for 20 seasons in the NBA. 7 of them for the Milwaukee Bucks and the rest for the Lakers. He racked up an astonishing 38,387 points in his time.
Wilt played from 1959 to 1973 as their careers intersected with each other. Kareem went on to pass Wilt Chamberlain after the latter’s retirement. Kareem is quoted saying, “It bothered Wilt, who’d had a bit of a one-sided rivalry with me since I’d started doing so well in the NBA.” Wilt Chamberlain was constantly compared throughout his career. Initially against the late great Bill Russell. Once Kareem burst onto the scene it was him.
Wilt Chamberlain was never too pleased with these comparisons. Wilt himself has the record for holding the most NBA records in history. Although he was always held as 2nd best to Russell and Kareem during his playing days.
LeBron James is expected to pass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar soon
LeBron James looks to break the historic record in the coming weeks. He will do it playing for the same team as Kareem did when he broke the record. It is bound to be a truly historic date in NBA history. Lebron will be doing it in his 20th season, matching Kareem’s career tally.
LeBron James currently sits 89 points away from the record. He will look forward to breaking it at Staples center for sure. The Lakers play two more games on their road trip. Once the road trip ends, LeBron will be set up perfectly to clinch it in Los Angeles.
Kareem and LeBron have always maintained a friendly relationship. Kareem has mentioned before that LeBron deserves to break the record. Therefore it would not be surprising to see a happy Kareem presenting LeBron with the award. In contrast to Wilt Chamberlain who had an aura of envy and jealousy when he passed it to Kareem.
Kareem and Wilt had their differences in the past. However, the future is now and LeBron is not going anywhere anytime soon. His sights will shift onto the next conquest once he sticks his flag on top of the NBA mountain. All everyone else can do is accept, and celebrate greatness.
