Kevin Durant, an advocate for marijuana use, campaigned to remove it from the banned substances list for active players. When the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the NBA and NBPA revealed the removal of marijuana from the list, many people credited KD for playing a significant role, which turned out to be true.

In a recent interview at CNBC and Boardroom’s inaugural Game Plan conference in Los Angeles, the former league MVP discussed his advocacy for removing marijuana from the banned list. He expressed that the stigma around it had lessened, and he believed it didn’t have any negative effects on the body.

“I just felt like it was becoming a thing around the country, around the world…The stigma behind it wasn’t as negative as it was before. It doesn’t affect you in any negative way.”

Durant then described his meeting with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver on the same topic. He admitted to being high during the meeting, which the commissioner noticed, leading to a short discussion. KD also mentioned that almost every NBA player uses marijuana.

“Well, he smelled it when I walked in,” Durant said. “So I didn’t really have to say much, you know what I’m saying? He kind of understood where this was going…It’s the NBA, man… everybody does it, to be honest. It’s like wine at this point.”

With his long-term advocacy for unbanning marijuana, KD has achieved success in his goal. He eagerly anticipates success on the basketball court as he prepares for the next season’s training camp with his Phoenix Suns. The Suns have done an excellent job building around him, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal, despite having almost no cap space. They have signed key free agents, providing them with a great chance to win it all next season.
