Klay Thompson has achieved a lot in his NBA career. But there is one thing that still bothers him to this day. One thing that he wishes he could do over. One thing that altered the course of NBA history.
That thing was Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals when Thompson switched on a pick-and-roll with Stephen Curry and let Kyrie Irving hit the game-winning shot over his teammate with 53 seconds left. In a candid interview on ‘SHOWTIME Basketball, Thompson revealed his biggest regret in his basketball career and how he still can’t watch that footage.
“That was a tough series. It’s still the biggest regret I have in my basketball career, switching that pick-and-roll with Steph with J.R. Smith and Kyrie Irving,” said Thompson. “I can’t bring myself to watch that footage, it’s too uncomfortable. I can’t believe I gave him that switch. Now, Kyrie’s got one of the greatest shots in NBA history. Steph’s a great defender too, but man I can’t believe I conceded that switch.”
Irving’s shot gave the Cavs a 92-89 lead and completed an incredible comeback from a 3-1 deficit in the series. The Warriors had been dominant all season long, winning a record-breaking 73 games in the regular season and breezing through the playoffs until they ran into LeBron James and his determined squad.
The Cavs became the first team in NBA history to overcome a 3-1 deficit in the Finals and the Warriors became the first team in NBA history to lose a Finals series after leading 3-1 and faced criticism for blowing their historic season.

How Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry bounced back from their loss

The loss was heartbreaking for Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry, one of the deadliest backcourts in NBA history, known as the “Splash Brothers” for their shooting prowess. Curry admitted that he and his teammates learned from their loss and respected their rivals’ performance more than blaming themselves.
“’16 was, you know, just an up and down crazy playoffs run, Finals. In the Finals, I think the wheels fell off and Kyrie and LeBron played unbelievable for three straight games,” said Stephen Curry. “I don’t think people talk about that part of it as much, it’s always like we all suck. We got beat, we didn’t lose. We got beat.“
The Cavs’ title drought continues since their epic comeback in 2016, but that’s a season that will live on in NBA history. The Warriors, meanwhile, have moved on from the past and are focused on the present.
They may have lost some of their prime and durability, but they still have the talent and experience to contend for another championship. And with Klay hungry for revenge after falling to the Lakers this year, they have a clear motivation to reclaim their throne.
