The championship run of the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 is one of the most memorable in the history of the league. LeBron James and Kyrie Irving came back after going down 3-1 in the NBA Finals, and the rest is history. They brought Cleveland its first championship in franchise history and ruined the greatest season for the 73-9 Warriors.
Last year, while live streaming on Twitch, Kyrie was asked by fans to tell a Kobe Bryant story. Kyrie went on to tell the fans a story in which Kobe said that Cleveland was not going to win the 2016 NBA championship; instead, it would be their arch-rivals, the Golden State Warriors, who would win the title. He said that Kobe told him this during a dinner they had in 2016, which was Kobe’s retirement season. Kyrie said, “We’re having dinner in 2016, and Kobe says, ‘I think Golden State is going to win the title this year.’ Bro, can you imagine Kobe saying this? This is my hero.”
Kyrie was surprised by Kobe’s comments because Kobe was his hero. Kobe also praised Steph Curry, who won his infamous unanimous MVP that season, saying, “Steph is killing it this year.” Kyrie was furious after Kobe told him that and promised that he would win the championship over the Warriors. He told Kobe that he didn’t want to hear about Steph anymore. “We’re gonna win this s***. I don’t wanna hear about Steph right now, bro.”

Kyrie Irving stayed true to his words and won the championship
It seems that after Kobe Bryant made predictions that the Warriors would win the 2016 championship, Kyrie took those predictions personally. After going down 3-1 in the NBA Finals, he went on one of the best three-game stretches in the history of the Finals alongside his teammate LeBron James to capture the championship and achieve the impossible.

It was Kyrie’s clutch shot, over none other than the unanimous MVP of that season, Steph Curry, that served as the dagger, winning the Cavaliers their first championship in franchise history and proving Kobe’s prediction about the Warriors winning the 2016 championship wrong. Kyrie proved his idol wrong but earned respect in his eyes.
