“Kyrie for AD” – NBA analyst hints SUPERSTAR DEAL between Lakers and Mavericks this offseason
Colin Cowherd sparks rumors of Lakers-Mavericks superstar deal
Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis
In a surprising turn of events, rumors have emerged suggesting a potential superstar deal between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks this offseason. NBA analyst Colin Cowherd recently hinted at the possibility, indicating that the Mavericks could be interested in acquiring Anthony Davis while the Lakers might have a soft spot for reuniting LeBron James with Kyrie Irving.
According to Cowherd, the Mavericks view Davis as the solution to their roster issues, providing them with a second scoring option alongside Luka Doncic. Davis’ ability to contribute offensively without relying on plays set up for him and his rim protection skills make him an attractive prospect for Dallas.
“Dallas would love A.D. He solves all their issues,” Cowherd said. “he gives them a second score. He’s not at all ball-dependent. Luca gives you the 70 games and the consistent energy. Anthony scores 23 without really setting up plays for him. He gives them a rim protector. I heard at the trading deadline Dallas has their eye on Anthony Davis, and they think the Lakers… they think LeBron still has a soft spot for Kyrie Irving. That, by the way, would be a shot-maker.
He added,“I’m just gonna go back to this: Dallas is calling on A.D. I think the Lakers and the Mavericks, you will hear in the next month, something. I really believe that, and I think you have to take the phone call and listen.”
Challenges and Considerations for Lakers Pursuing Kyrie Irving
However, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst casts doubt on the practicality of a potential Kyrie Irving acquisition by the Lakers. Windhorst explains that making such a move would require significant roster changes, potentially involving the departure of players like Rui Hachimura, whom the Lakers acquired earlier this year.
In addition to roster changes, pursuing Irving presents other challenges for the Lakers. Irving, who turned 31 in March, has shown no willingness to take a pay cut this offseason, limiting the Lakers’ financial flexibility. Furthermore, his injury history and off-court controversies raise concerns about his long-term reliability and potential distractions.
“To do it, they would have to pretty much jettison everybody they just picked up, including Rui Hachimura,” said Windhorst. “They’d have to probably waive Malik Beasley. There are sign-and-trade scenarios where if they could get Dallas’ cooperation and maybe sweeten that pot for them, that they could keep more of their roster together.”
While reuniting James and Irving is appealing, the Lakers appear to be shifting their focus toward alternative options that better align with their roster and financial considerations. As the offseason progresses, the team will likely explore other potential signings that can provide stability and complement their existing core.
