“Pass it to my left” Kyrie Irving laughs off questions regarding future plans with Brooklyn Nets

Kyrie Irving at the BET Awards

Kyrie Irving, the star player for the Brooklyn Nets, has drawn interest across the league as his future is unknown. Before the deadline of June 29, the talented guard’s player option for the next season must be resolved, and Kyrie doesn’t exactly seem like someone who wants to stay with the Brooklyn Nets. As Wednesday’s deadline draws near for Irving to decide whether to take or decline his $36.9 million player option, his future at Brooklyn is still very much in doubt and Irving will become a free agent if he declines.

Along with his stepmother Shetellia Riley Irving, who also happens to be his agent, the Nets superstar attended the BET Awards on Sunday night. When questioned by Complex News’ Pierce Simpson at the Red Carpet on Sunday whether or not he wanted to stay with his present team, the superstar steadfastly declined to answer.

The Kyrie Irving narrative so far at Brooklyn

The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported earlier this month that Kyrie Irving and the Nets were at a “impasse” over his future with the team and that the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, and New York Knicks would be possible contenders if Irving wanted to leave Brooklyn. After the Nets were swept by the Boston Celtics in the first round of the playoffs, speculation about Irving’s next team increased.Irving persuaded Kevin Durant to join the Brooklyn Nets in the summer of 2019 after persuading him to join the Knicks instead. If Irving were to leave the Nets, this would also indicate that he was leaving Durant.

Given that it never really started, the iconic partnership between Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant may be coming to a bitter ending. Since joining the Nets, Irving has only taken part in 103 of the 246 regular-season games, missing games mostly for personal reasons and vaccination requirement in New York City. Brooklyn finished with the No. 7 spot in the East despite Durant only participating in 55 games due to an injury. The team was swept by the Celtics in the first round of the playoffs.

At the BET Awards on Sunday night, a reporter asked Kyrie Irving if he plans on staying at Brooklyn Nets in wake of the current situation. He replied laughing: “Pass it…pass it to my left,” Kyrie said as he was pointing at his step-mom who is his agent. According to the sources, Irving has been given authority by the Nets to discuss sign-and-trade deals with other clubs.

Although Kyrie’s choice will have an impact on Kevin Durant’s future as a teammate, the latter insists that he won’t get entangled in the point guard’s position. If Irving doesn’t want to wait for the Nets to finish the signing and trade, he has a backdoor. Irving could easily sign a $6 million mid-level exemption with any free agent club if he waives his player option. With Irving at the core, everything is possible.
