Once again, controversy surrounds the Dallas Mavericks‘ superstar, Kyrie Irving. Irving recently entered into a partnership with ANTA, a well-known Chinese shoe brand, to launch his new shoe line. However, this move has ignited a firestorm of criticism, as it’s been reported that ANTA has struck a deal with a company allegedly involved in the use of forced labor within its manufacturing facilities.
Irving, now the Chief Creative Officer of ANTA, introduced the logo for his new “Enlightened Warrior” shoe line in late September through his collaboration with the company.
Irving, who had been in a professional contract with Nike for the past 8 years, recently severed ties with the company. This decision stemmed from a controversy surrounding Irving posting an antisemitic video on his social media platform.
The heart of the issue revolves around the cotton used in manufacturing, which is sourced from China’s Xinjiang province. Xinjiang has faced allegations of human rights abuses and forced labor against the Uyghur Muslim population.
ANTAs use of Xinjiang cotton, a region associated with alleged human rights abuses and forced labor, has raised ethical and political questions. Kyrie Irving’s affiliation with the company has added to these concerns, given the U.S. government’s stance on the issue.
Irving’s ongoing partnership with ANTA has faced significant criticism. Critics argue that, in light of the controversies surrounding the company’s practices and associations, Irving should reconsider his affiliation. Interestingly, the NBA, which is actively seeking to expand in the Chinese markets, has remained silent on the matter, characterizing it as the personal choice of the Mavericks’ star.
Kyrie Irving’s eight-year Nike deal came to an end last year
Dallas Mavericks’ superstar Kyrie Irving has enjoyed an eight-year-long partnership with Nike, a collaboration that has given rise to the popular shoe line “Kyrie’s,” introduced to the market in 2014. Valued at $11 million dollars, this lucrative deal with Irving came to a close in December last year.

The contract came to an end following the superstar’s posting of an antisemitic video on his social media account, which he subsequently deleted. After suspending the contract, Nike released a statement to the media, saying, “At Nike, we believe there is no place for hate speech and we condemn any form of antisemitism. We are deeply saddened and disappointed by the situation and its impact on everyone.”
Following this incident, Nike’s founder, Phil Knight, made a media appearance in which he expressed his perspective on his relationship with the star. He stated, “I would doubt that we go back… Kyrie stepped over the line. It’s kind of that simple. He made some statements that we just can’t abide by, and that’s why we ended the relationship. And I was fine with that.”
