LeBron James and Kyrie Irving parted ways after winning the 2016 NBA Championship because as per speculations, Kyrie was tired of being the second option behind LeBron. Since his departure from Cleveland, Kyrie hasn’t found a home on any of the teams he joined. He couldn’t find the same success he had while playing with LeBron. Even after signing with the Dallas Mavericks for three years and $126 million, Kyrie thought he would stop hearing fans and news outlets talk about him going to the Lakers.

However, recently, a young Lakers fan met Kyrie and asked him whether he was going to join the Los Angeles Lakers, current home of LeBron. Kyrie asked why the young fan asked that question and expressed that he had to deal with these rumors all summer. He emphasized that he was now with Dallas. “Are you going to the Lakers?” the young fan asked. “No, bro. No, bro. Why did you ask that?! C’mon, man, I have to deal with that all summer. I’m in Dallas, bro. C’mon now,” Kyrie said.

Since LeBron joined the Lakers, there have been countless rumors each offseason about Kyrie potentially joining the Los Angeles-based team. When Kyrie requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets before the trade deadline last season, the biggest rumors were that he would be joining the Lakers. Despite this, the Lakers chose to make moves to increase their depth rather than their star power, which had failed them before after they added Russell Westbrook.

The Mavericks made a trade for Kyrie Irving during this trade deadline to enhance their championship prospects. However, they traded away two crucial players, Spencer Dinwiddie and Dorian Finney Smith, who had been instrumental in their journey to the Western Conference Finals in 2022. As a result, allowing Kyrie to become a free agent and potentially leave the team was not an option, especially considering the significant assets they had invested in this trade for a mere three-month rental.

Consequently, when the offseason arrived, Dallas was keen on swiftly securing Kyrie’s signature. Despite Kyrie not receiving numerous offers in free agency, Dallas was committed to treating him with respect. Therefore, they extended an offer and successfully signed Kyrie to a three-year, $126 million contract. This move aimed to maintain Kyrie’s partnership with Luka Doncic.

The Dallas-based team had a critical reason for ensuring Kyrie’s re-signing: their star player, Luka, had been discontented with the Mavericks. The team had failed to construct a competitive roster around him, which hindered his ability to reach the NBA Finals despite earning four consecutive All-NBA 1st team selections. To prevent Luka from requesting a trade and leaving the Mavericks in a difficult situation, Dallas took steps to secure Kyrie and solidify their commitment to building a more competitive team.
