“The comparison just gotta stop,” Kyrie Irving sheds hope in Kevin Durant-less Nets believes the situation is better than last year despite the team going 0-2

Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving

After winning 12 consecutive games the Brooklyn Nets have now lost three of their last five games, going 0-2 since star forward Kevin Durant was sidelined with a knee injury for about a month. Last night they lost to Josh Giddey and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led Oklahoma City Thunder.

At this point in the season last year, the Nets were in a comparable circumstance. An MCL injury had been experienced by Durant. The team suffered greatly during his absence, going on a nine-game losing streak while they waited for his return to save their season.

Despite their consecutive losses, Kyrie Irving is certain that the Nets won’t have any trouble without their top player. He also thinks it’s impossible to compare their current circumstances to how it was a year ago, he remarked, “I don’t think we’re gonna struggle without Kevin [Durant] out. That’s not my belief. I know guys in the locker room don’t believe that and this isn’t last year at all. The comparison just gotta stop.”

Fans think Kyrie Irving doesn’t know how to lead without a star forward by his side, raising doubts about his leadership abilities. Fans expect Kyrie to lead the Nets in the same way that Kevin Durant did when Kyrie was out. Kevin Durant has a 6-3 record with the Nets without Kyrie Irving this season. While Irving has already lost two straight. But him still being positive and having a competitive mentality is what the Nets’ fans should be happy about.

Following back-to-back victories, the Oklahoma City Thunder visited Brooklyn on Sunday evening and defeated the Brooklyn Nets 112-102. The Nets are now 0-2 without Kevin Durant, and Ben Simmons was a late withdrawal due to back pain.

Nets guard Seth Curry was the team’s leading scorer, with 23 points. For the Thunder, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Josh Giddey dominated with 28 points each. Kyrie Irving finished with 15 points and struggled throughout the game.

“The challenge for us as a group (is) to be able to sustain,” Nets coach Jacque Vaughn said after the loss. He further added: ”That is harder mentally and physically because (Durant) does save you at times and give you a bucket, and now your defense is set. So the challenge with this group is they have to dig in and have a mental fortitude greater than before. Because every possession does matter.” Kyrie has to step up and ball out for the Nets to start playing some winning ball again.
