Lonnie Walker IV details how Russell Westbrook is helping him be more confident on the court for LA Lakers
Russell Westbrook and Lonnie Walker IV
Lonnie Walker IV has become one of the few offensive options for the Los Angeles Lakers this season. After being traded from the San Antonio Spurs, Walker IV has found his identity in the roster in a very short time. Walker IV is averaging 16.6 points per game at 47.1% shooting from the field, and both numbers are his career best so far in his career. Coach Darvin Ham and the coaching staff have put immense trust in Walker to contribute to the offense on a daily basis.
In his recent interview, the Lakers guard opened up about his new role with the Lakers and the influence of veterans like LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Russell Westbrook on his game.
Speaking of the influence the three stars have on his game, Walker said “when you have players like Anthony Davis, LeBron, and Russ the defense tends to focus on them three than everyone else a lot less.” Having Davis and LeBron does open up the floor for the other players on the team. However, so far this season, the Lakers have failed to capitalize on it mostly.
Recalling an incident with Westbrook, Walker IV said, “There was a time where I had a midrange pull up and I passed it and Russ cursed me out after, during the timeout call like ‘Yo, you don’t do that. I pass the ball you shoot okay?”
The team has shown immense trust in Lonnie Walker and gotten him involved more on the offensive end. Russ hasn’t been effective when driving the offense through the second team but has inspired the players to put the team’s needs ahead of them. Speaking of Westbrook’s sacrifice, Lonnie said, “I am here to do whatever it takes for my team to win and Russ is one of the first leaders to show that.“
Lonnie Walker IV and other key players shine in the Lakers’ win over Pistons
Lonnie Walker IV again scored crucial 17 points for the Lakers in their win over the Detroit Pistons. With their win over the Pistons, the Lakers secured their 4th win of the season.
In his previous game against the Brooklyn Nets, Walker IV scored 25 points for the win. After winning against the Pistons, confident Lonnie Walker said, “I think the world is finally noticing what I’m capable of doing. I’m just doing what I do best.”
Anthony Davis once again had a monstrous performance for the Lakers in the second consecutive game, as he led the team in points, rebounds, and blocks. He scored 38 points, of which 14 came in the fourth quarter.
Moreover, he also secured 16 rebounds and 4 blocks for the Lakers. Austin Reaves who has been balling these past few games for the Lakers came clutch and scored 16 points. He also dropped 6 crucial dimes. The Lakers will face Lonnie’s previous team San Antonio Spurs on Sunday, and Darvin Ham would expect Walker to have a big night. With Dennis Schroder and Thomas Bryant back in the lineup, the Lakers are expected to have better results.
