“My man got too many recovery beers” – Luka Doncic gets DRAGGED after somersault tumble to the side stands

“My man got too many recovery beers” – Luka Doncic gets DRAGGED after somersault tumble to the side stands

Luka Doncic

Luka Doncic is one of the best players in the league, but even the best end up with Shaqtin-A-Fool moments sometimes. Doncic is generally so very adept with his balance and body control as he’s lulling the opposition defense to sleep before making a swift (sort of) move to score. This is why the recent incident where Doncic went tumbling into some fans after slowly losing balance was objectively hilarious.

With just over 5 minutes left in the third quarter, Luka Doncic tipped a defensive rebound and tried to control it. He never was able to gain control of the loose ball though, and in the process of chasing after it, he seemed to lose any semblance of balance and went tumbling into the front row. Everyone in the arena was momentarily worried for the Slovenian superstar’s health at first as the fall was genuinely scary.

Luka dusted himself off and returned to the court without any serious damage being done though, which was a relief. Of course, once the physical safety of the player was ensured, the internet, in classic fashion, wasted no time in laughing at Doncic. The YouTube comments were particularly brutal towards Doncic, with one saying that Luka had too many “recovery beers”, a reference to the infamous post-game quote from Luka after his legendary 61-21-10 performance.

It’s all fun and games and we can joke because Luka didn’t hurt himself from the fall. The game was really a double whammy for Doncic. Not only did he take a hilarious tumble that he got clowned on the internet for, but Dallas ended up losing the game too. The Clippers didn’t miss Paul George who sat this game out. Instead, they rallied behind Kawhi Leonard’s 33 points and Norman Powell’s 27.

Evaluating Luka Doncic and Mavericks at the halfway point

42 games into the season, the Dallas Mavericks sit with a 23-19 record. Not bad, but not great either. After two consecutive losses, they have fallen behind the Sacramento Kings in the standings to 5th. The advanced metrics suggest that Dallas’ offense is elite. That is to be expected considering that Luka is the engine running that offense. The wunderkind is already one of the greatest offensive players ever and no, that is not an exaggeration.

The problem for Dallas is that their offense completely and utterly falls apart when Luka is off the court. With Luka on the court, the Mavs have an offensive rating of 120.2 which is better than the 2020-21 Brooklyn Nets (118.3), the greatest offense in NBA history. However, when Luka is off the court, the Mavs’ offensive rating drops down to 107.2 (13 points per 100 possessions!). That is 2.3 points worse than the worst offense this season which is the Charlotte Hornets at 109.5.

With the trade deadline less than a month away, the Mavericks should be searching around for players. This data seems to suggest that they need another good-to-great shot creator. Ideally, someone who can sustain the offense when Luka sits.
