“51’s not bad,” Luka Doncic trolls Gregg Popovich for his failed goal of holding him under 50 as Mavericks get past Spurs

“51’s not bad,” Luka Doncic trolls Gregg Popovich for his failed goal of holding him under 50 as Mavericks get past Spurs

After Luka Doncic’s monstrous game against the New York Knicks in which he produced 60 points, 20 rebounds, and 10 assists to lead the Dallas Mavericks to a victory against the Knicks 126-121. Gregg Popovich, head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, was questioned about Doncic’s historical accomplishment.

Speaking on this, Popovich said, “There’s always something in our lives that makes you say, ‘I can’t believe that happened.’ That was one of them for sure. That was incredible. I was thinking about — what, Doncic had 60-20-10, so 90? Has anyone ever scored 90 on a stat like that? Wow. Incredible. … Maybe Wilt?”  He then claimed that the Spurs will try and hold Luka for 50 points and won’t let him score more than that, “50 is going to be our goal. We’re holding Luka under 50.”

That clearly did not age well as the Luka Doncic-led Mavericks to beat the San Antonio Spurs 126-125 in their latest fixture. The Cherry on top of the cake is that Doncic scored 51 points despite Popovich’s claims of holding him under 50. Luka then proceeded to hilariously troll Popovich, he said, “I just wanted to get a win … but 51’s not bad.”

With their victory on New Year’s Eve, they have extended their winning streak to 6 games. The Spurs should’ve definitely seen it coming given their 118.5 defensive rating, which is the lowest in the NBA. This implies that San Antonio is the only team this season to allow more points per 100 possessions than any other club.

The Mavericks needed every one of Luka Doncic’s 51 points to defeat the Spurs as Dallas’ legendary five-game run came to an end. Dallas defeated San Antonio 126-125 on Saturday night because of Doncic’s two rebounds and two free throws in the final 4.5 seconds. This was Dallas’ sixth straight win. With his typical mix of step-back jumpers, mid-range jumpers, 3-pointers, and free throws, Doncic destroyed San Antonio. He made 18 of 28 field goals.

In the previous five games, Doncic had three 50-point performances, including a 60-point, 21-rebound, and 10-assist performance against New York on Tuesday night that required OT. He is the only NBA player to ever have 250 points, 50 rebounds, and 50 assists over the course of five games.
