The debate of who is the greatest point guard has become a raging topic of discussion ever since Stephen Curry won his fourth championship. Many think that Curry’s championship, along with his accolades and influence, make him the greatest point guard to play the game. Magic Johnson, who many consider Curry’s closest competition in the GOAT point guard debate, disagrees.
Johnson took shots at Curry, insinuating that he was greater than Curry since he won more accolades than him. He was quoted saying, “So if he got more than five championships, if he got more than three Finals MVP and three league MVPs, then he’s the greatest. If he got more than No. 1 in assists all time in the Finals, No. 2 in double-doubles, No. 1 in triple-doubles all time in the NBA Playoffs, No. 4 in steals all time in the playoffs, if he got more than those numbers, he’s the best.” He referenced his own achievements and said Curry can only be called the greatest when he surpasses these numbers.
Notably, Johnson has one more title than Curry, two more Finals MVP and one more regular season MVP. These factors could be the basis for his argument that he is the greatest point guard of all time.
Fans had mixed reactions to this statement. Some agreed with Johnson. Others called him, delusional saying that he played against plumbers and that his accolades held no real value. In the end, the debate is subjective and what factors are important to one person may not be important to the other. This skews the lens through which people decide who the greatest is, leading to contrasting opinions.
How good is Stephen Curry?
While some may not believe that Stephen Curry is the greatest point guard of all time, there is no doubt that he is one of the best to ever fill the shoes of the point guard position
Curry is a 2x MVP, 9x All-Star, 9x All-NBA. and 4x NBA champion. He is credited as the greatest shooter to ever step foot on a basketball court and for ushering in the 3-point revolution in the NBA. He is the first player to ever win a unanimous MVP award. His style of play has forced entire NBA teams to rethink their offence and defense. Even at an age when most professional players begin to consider retirement, Curry has performed at a high level.
His impact on the next generation of basketball players has also been undeniable. He is the reason children try to pull up from 25+ feet on a regular basis. While Johnson’s accolades might be more impressive, Curry’s influence definitely makes him more than eligible for the title of the greatest point guard.
