Manu Ginobili, the San Antonio Spurs‘ four-time NBA champion is one of the headliners for Saturday night’s enshrinement event in Springfield, Massachusetts. Ginobili spent all 16 of his NBA seasons in San Antonio, forming a Big Three with Tim Duncan and Tony Parker that was, and undoubtedly will remain, one of the league’s greatest. Ginobili has played in more games than any other player in NBA history, and he has a greater winning percentage (72.1%).

The majority of those triumphs should also be credited to Tim Duncan and Tony Parker, but Manu Ginobili’s sacrifice cemented the culture that supported San Antonio’s dynasty for 20 years. When coach Gregg Popovich asked him to run the Spurs’ second unit offence, he was already an All-Star and a winner. From that point on, the 6-foot-6 southpaw raised his game to All-NBA status and contributed to three more championships.

Ginobili was no stranger to success, aside from his NBA achievements, Ginobili is one of only two players in history—the other being Bill Bradley—to have won an Olympic gold medal, an NBA championship, and the Euro League championship. He had his jersey retired in March 2019 behind 8 other Spurs’ legends Tim Duncan, Bruce Bowen , Sean Elliot , George Gervin, Avery Johnson , Johnny Moore , David Robinson and James Silas.

Ginobili was the Spurs’ all-time leader in 3-pointers made (1,495) and steals (1,392) despite being selected 57th overall in the 1999 Draft. He also finished his career third in games played (1,057), fourth in assists (4,001), fourth in free throws made (3,380), and fifth in points (14,043). He was a two-time All-Star (2005, 2011), a member of the All-NBA Third Team in 2008 and 2011, and the NBA Sixth Man of the Year in 2008.

After moving remarks by the other twelve members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2022, it was finally time for Spurs great Manu Ginobili to deliver the event’s closing address. He was greeted with the largest round of applause of the evening. The “Manu” chanting began as soon as emcee Ahmad Rashad said his name. They made you believe they were in San Antonio.

Tim Duncan’s timidity was made fun of by Ginobili, who then asked if he wanted to deliver the speech in place of him. Of course, he didn’t, so Manu began by attributing his attendance in the Hall of Fame to the Spurs, Argentina, and his youth club teams. At the age of 18, he turned professional in Argentina. At the event, Ettore Messina, a former Spurs coach, was recognised for helping Manu become an NBA player with the Italian league. Manu was later found in Italy while playing for his country.

He continued by expressing gratitude to Gregg Popovich and telling Duncan that the coach had taught him how to lead while still being the finest player to ever play. Then he talked about how Tony Parker and he made the ideal partnership because they knew when to complement one another and when to let the other take centre stage, at least for the brief moment when it was their ball instead of Duncan’s

He continued by saying that winning teams require the appropriate role players in addition to stars and coaches, giving shoutouts to people like Bruce Bowen, Matt Bonner, Tiago Splitter, Boris Diaw, Michael Finley, and Fabricio Oberto, to name a few. Additionally, he acknowledged the whole Spurs organisation, including Will Sevening and the equipment managers.
