“It makes no sense” Marcus Smart addresses confusion over the Celtics’ willingness to release Ime Udoka to rival Eastern Conference team
Marcus Smart
Marcus Smart is one of the most feared defenders in the league at the moment. He had an incredible last season bagging the defensive player of the year award for himself and a major part of his success needs to be accredited to the Boston Celtics’ coaching staff. However, things have not been the same following their finals run against the Golden State Warriors.
While the Celtics prepped to make another deep playoff run, Ime Udoka was flagged by the team for involving himself in a cheating scandal. This resulted in a year-long suspension away from the team. Smart, who won the DPOY award under the defensive mastermind spoke about recent rumors of the suspended coach potentially joining the Brooklyn Nets.
According to Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe, Smart said, “His (Udoka) name got slandered and slaughtered and it was, ‘He’ll probably never coach again.’ And a couple months later he’s possibly going to be the coach of one of our biggest rivals. It’s tough. It makes no sense.”
Marcus Smart’s main point of concern may be the fact that Ime Udoka suits exactly what the Nets require in their vacancy. Brooklyn has been criticized for being an offensively talented roster with no defensive schemes or capabilities. This will certainly elevate the Nets to another level and pose a threat to the Celtics.
Ime Udoka is a potential candidate to take over the Nets coaching team
On Tuesday, the Nets announced that they parted ways with Steve Nash. The former NBA player was pointed out as being one of their weakest links. NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted shortly after the termination claiming that Ime Udoka was a front-runner for the vacant spot.
As of now, Jacque Vaughn has taken over as the acting head coach while the Nets finalize a decision. Udoka was booked to having a relationship with a female staffer of the Celtics. His knowledge of defense was what initially stopped the Nets from qualifying past the Celtics in the first round of the playoffs last season. He will be a great mentor for Ben Simmons as well.
