One of the more divisive athletes in sports, not just in the NBA but in general, is Kyrie Irving. The star player for the Dallas Mavericks. After being traded from the Brooklyn Nets in February last year. Irving signed a three-year, $120 million contract with the Mavs this past offseason. This is his first full season in Dallas.
Owner of the Mavericks Mark Cuban appeared on All The Smoke with former NBA players Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes to talk about everything related to the Mavericks and his career, including his feelings towards and relationship with Irving. He talks about how eager they were to have Kyrie join them, but they had to postpone his trade because of the Covid controversy.
Mark Cuban said:
His heart is always in the right place. Now, you might not agree with him all the time, there might be takes that he has that you're like, 'Ok, Ky. That's ok'. I told him on vaccines, we would have had an issue but hopefully, that never comes up again.
When New York City implemented a policy requiring its athletes to be vaccinated to play in home games, Kyrie Irving refused to get vaccinated during COVID-19. Mark Cuban has stated time and time again that he thinks Irving “gets a bad rap” because of some of the things he has said or shared on social media in the past. Cuban, however, understands that while people may not get along or agree on everything, there still needs to be some measure of respect.
Mark Cuban’s respect for Kyrie Irving is huge
Known for more than just his incredible handles and ability to make seemingly impossible shots. Mark Cuban said:
He takes care of people and donates and does all sh*t and there's no cameras. Like when somebody reached out to me and it was an Indian basketball team and they needed some money. I just texted him, Kai I'm putting in half, you want to cover the other half? He didn't think twice. It's just done.
Kyrie Irving has averaged 23.9 points, 6.1 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.1 steals through 11 games in the 2023–24 NBA season. Despite Kyrie scoring 26 points in today’s game against the Clippers, they were defeated. Even so, he looks good and has an amazing average.
