Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, recently shed light on the franchise’s unsuccessful efforts to acquire Tyrese Haliburton in the 2020 NBA Draft. During a candid conversation on The Pat Bev podcast, Cuban revealed that the Mavericks were keen on pairing the young guard with their star player, Luka Doncic.
Haliburton, who was highly sought after in the draft, was eventually picked 12th overall by the Sacramento Kings. On the other hand, the Mavericks, who held the 18th pick, selected Josh Green. While Green has shown promise, there’s no denying Haliburton’s impact in the league so far, sparking conversations about what if the Mavs had been successful in their trade efforts.
“We did everything we could to trade up and get him,” Cuban said. “Rick was our coach at the time. Rick goes to Indiana, what’s the first deal he does?” Cuban humorously pointed out that after Rick Carlisle’s move to the Indiana Pacers, one of his first deals was securing Haliburton from the Kings.
Mavericks’ moves after the Tyrese Haliburton bid and future prospects
The Mavericks’ failure to take Haliburton undoubtedly impacted their subsequent actions. The team made a significant trade to acquire Kyrie Irving in the 2022-23 midseason, a move many speculate might not have been necessary if they had acquired Haliburton.
The Mavericks, now led by the dynamic duo of Doncic and Irving, are preparing to make up for a challenging 2022–23 season. As the team recalibrates, fans and analysts will undoubtedly keep revisiting the missed opportunity with Haliburton.
However, as the Mavericks look to the future, they focus on leveraging their current roster and ensuring the synergy between their star players. With a combination like Doncic and Irving, the franchise hopes to re-establish itself as a formidable force in the coming seasons.
