As the new generation enters the league young players often get compared to the legends of the game. The Timberwolves guard, Anthony Edwards, is showing fans glimpses of a basketball legend in the making through his performances. The 2020 number one draft pick is getting compared to one of the greatest players to ever touch the basketball, Michael Jordan.
The latest Minnesota Timberwolves star is getting called the ‘next Jordan’ throughout this season. The player’s style, athleticism, mindset, and even appearance have reminded fans of Jordan on multiple occasions. The 22-year-old’s monstrous dunk over John Collins yesterday has given rise to these comparisons. Some fans believe that the dunk was very similar to Michael Jordan‘s. The discussions about the comparison have been going on for some time.
It looks like the debate will finally be put to rest by MJ himself. These conversations were only happening between fans and analysts, but it seems like Jordan has agreed to the claims. On Fox’s ‘First Things First’ NBA insider, Chris Broussard, has revealed that Jordan agrees with similarities between him and Edwards.
I reached out to the GOAT today. Michael Jordan. Jordan said there are similarities in their games. He agreed. If Jordan says there are similarities, there are similarities.Chris Broussard said via First Things First
Broussard admitted that Edwards would never be considered in the greatest of all-time conversations despite chances of having a great NBA career. However, the analyst believes that the guard does share similarities with the NBA legend in terms of athleticism and ‘explosive dunks.’
In addition, the player’s desire to play is similar to Jordan’s, Broussard said referring to the moment when Edwards dislocated his finger during the dunk and still came back and finished the game.
Anthony Edwards wants the Jordan comparisons to be stopped
Ever since his draft in 2020, Anthony Edwards has been compared to Jordan. It all started when Edward’s former teammate Patrick Beverley appeared on The Old Man & the Three podcast. He was among the first players who hinted at the similarities between Edwards and Jordan. On the podcast, Beverley stated that Edwards has what it takes to become the next Jordan.
Edwards then further reacted to the comparisons. The athlete was interviewed by Jose Martinez from Complex. During this interview, while talking about the comparisons with Jordan, Ant-Man confidently claimed that MJ would not be able to guard him on the court. However, when it came to Beverley’s statement Edwards did not agree.
I just want them to stop. Because he's the greatest to ever play basketball and I'm so far from it. Like, not even close.Anthony Edwards said via Complex
Edwards admitted that he is nowhere near Jordan.
Stop comparing me to Michael Jordan. He's Michael Jordan, I'm my own basketball player. Whatever I do, I do, but yeah, I'm nowhere near Michael Jordan.Anthony Edwards further added
According to Edwards, he has his own identity and style of playing. He does not want to get compared to the greatest of all time and genuinely wants the comparisons to stop.
