AAU basketball seems to be the most important talent generator in USA Basketball. Young players become “the next big prospect” here in these tournaments. Michael Porter Jr. recently claimed that his practice sessions at Mokan in AAU were the hardest, probably even harder than pro and college-level basketball.
During an interview with Tayler Rooks, the Denver Nuggets star reminisced about his enjoyable time with Trae Young, emphasizing their strong bond. He recalled fond memories of traveling to Kansas City, staying at their coach’s house, and having two to three days of quality time together. Additionally, MPJ boldly declared that they were the greatest AAU team of all time.
According to Porter Jr., the practices and overall experience at Mokan were more difficult than both college and the NBA combined. Mokan aimed to prepare players for the challenges they would encounter in college, but Porter Jr. emphasized that the level of difficulty exceeded his expectations. He described his time at Mokan as challenging and demanding.
“Mokan? Those practices and all that is harder than college and the NBA combined… Mokan, they try to prepare you for like what you’re going to face in college but it’s way harder than that. Mokan was hard.”
As MPJ confidently made his bold claim, Tayler Rooks was taken aback by his statement. MPJ further asserted that the practices at Mokan were unquestionably more rigorous than what he experiences at his current level in the NBA. He believed that intense training was necessary, considering they were being prepared for the highest level of basketball competition.
What is Mokan, and how did Michael Porter Jr. and Trae Young benefit from it?
Mokan, the elite grassroots basketball program based in Kansas City, has gained a reputation for shaping young talents and preparing them for the grueling realities of collegiate and professional basketball. Porter Jr.’s statement only underscores the immense dedication and relentless work ethic required to thrive in this program.
The program places an emphasis on honing fundamental skills, instilling mental toughness, and exposing players to intense competition from an early age. Its rigorous training regimen and high-intensity practices push athletes beyond their limits, simulating the demanding environment of college and professional basketball.
The statement by Porter Jr. not only highlights the demanding nature of Mokan’s training but also serves as a testament to the exceptional talent and resilience of Trae Young and himself. They both are now sensations in the NBA and the credit, according to MPJ, should go to Mokan.
