Freddie Coleman on LeBron James contract extension

LeBron James is a megastar that every franchise is looking to have on their team. Yes, he is 37, but he certainly is not old. After entering his last contracted season with the Los Angeles Lakers, he is reported to have begun contract extension talks with general manager Rob Pelinka. The talks are productive according to NBA analyst Dave McMenamin. LBJ’s agent Rich Paul said that the talks will continue following the positive outcome of 1st round talks. LeBron is eligible to sign a two-year deal worth $97 million until June 30th, 2023 but ‘important’ talks have begun well before the actual signing date.

An extension could see the 4-time Champion playing in his 40s with the Lakers, and the franchise won’t mind that as long as he is productive enough for them. Having made his intentions to play alongside his son before he retired, Bronny James could wear a Lakers jersey. Ironically Lakers don’t have any high draft pick to ensure Bronny’s contract, and so if the collaboration does not happen, LBJ may make a move.

Analyst Freddie Coleman said it is imperative that James gets used to being a “complementary piece,” if he moves away from the Lakers. Discussing LeBron’s contract with the KJM crew, Coleman said that if James leaves the Lakers in a bid to play with his son, there will be some caveats.

Coleman warns megastar of the effects of moving away from the current franchise as he said, “LeBron James has to get used to something like this. If you’re gonna move away from the Los Angeles Lakers, wherever you go, that doesn’t mean they’re gonna move heaven and earth for you. You’re gonna have to go and be a complementary piece, even though you’re still great.”

Freddie Coleman asks LeBron James to be realistic and provides his input on the same.

LeBron James always had been a “go-to guy” in every franchise he played in the past. Cleveland was heavily dependent on LeBron, and while Miami Heat had 2 other megastars of that era, they still looked at LeBron as a leader. Currently at the Lakers also, LBJ exerts a high amount of power in terms of calling the game and also affecting the franchise’s trade decisions.

That is not wrong if you can play like LeBron James. He certainly is a generational talent and his presence on the team ensures a playoff berth. Also, chances of making it to the NBA Finals are also high with “playoff-LeBron” on the team.

So according to Freddie Coleman, if LeBron is to make a move ‘now’, he might have to settle for a complementary role in a championship contender franchise.

Explaining his views on LBJ’s future the 55-old-analyst said, “You don’t have to worry about that in the Lakers. You’re still the dude in Los Angeles. But if you want to move out of LA, you wanna be part of a building program. You wanna play for your son. There’s gonna be some caveats you’re gonna have to deal with. One of those caveats is, wherever you go, you’re not gonna be the guy at 38, 39, 40 years old of age.”

He further added, “If you’re that guy, that doesn’t mean the basketball team is any good competing for a championship, no matter how great LeBron is. That’s something that he may have to wrap his head around.”

Tapping on LeBron’s age factor, Freddie Coleman believes that teams would be cautious moving ahead with any big amount contract for him as 1 injury can sit the King out and cost the team the entire season. Recently we also have observed a huge dip in LeBron’s on-court availability as he played in just above 100 games for the Lakers in 2 seasons – missing nearly 37% of the games.

Coleman doubts LeBron’s ability to play a complementary role.

To top his assessment, radio host Coleman claims that LeBron James’ ego will not let him be a complementary player. He argued, that LeBron James continues to be a key player for the Lakers at 37 years of age. So after dominating the league and teams for 19-20 seasons, Freddie considers that the four-time MVP might not be able to handle the complementary role.

Coleman said, “I wonder LeBron James, as powerful as he still is, will have enough of an ego to deal with that if that’s gonna be the case if he wants to move out of Los Angeles.” Well, LeBron had already shown his ability to adjust, when he played in Miami and in his 2nd stint with the Cavs. But if he could mold himself in a similar fashion; it could help him win more titles in coming seasons.
