Former NBA great Nick ‘Swaggy P’ Young was sent falling into the ropes after alleging that his opponent, Malcolm Minikon, had executed an illegal headbutt. Young, 37, is most known for his tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers and as the ex-partner of Australian musician Iggy Azalea.

He was making his boxing debut against online sensation Minikon in a five-round exhibition battle at the Social Gloves 2 event. As the battle began, it became evident that the 6’7″ Young lacked boxing ability, but he utilised his size advantage to stay within range.

These days, the 37-year-old Los Angeles native has laid down the basketball in favour of a pair of boxing gloves as he prepares to become the next crossover athlete to put his skills to the test in combat sports. Young isn’t the first basketball star to make this move, but he’s learned the hard way that, just like in the NBA, you have to take the job seriously – or someone will make you pay for it.

Nick Young also joins NBA players Deron Williams and Nate Robinson in attempting boxing with varied degrees of success. While Williams looked strong in his lone fight this past December against NFL running back Frank Gore, Robinson fared far worse as he was faceplanted with a vicious knockout delivered by Jake Paul in his debut.

“Sometimes it’s fun, sometimes they throw me in there for sparring sessions against professionals, and you realize how far you are from being a real boxer,” Young said during an interview. “But for the most part, I’ve been having fun. “It’s good trying something new, learning something new. After basketball, finding something that gives you that same kind of excitement, so it feels good.”

Young claims he’s been devoted to boxing since stepping into the ring for the first time. It all started with a challenge from his management, who was searching for anything to keep him in shape after the basketball season ended. Young, who stands 6-foot-7 and weighs more than 200 pounds, towers above most others attempting to master the sport but he also recognises that his inherent abilities will only get him so far when the punches start flying.

Nick Young vs Malcolm Minikon

During Nick Young’s battle with Malcolm Minikon, Young’s massive blow sent Minikon’s mouthpiece flying in the second round, only for Minikon to hit back with a hard punch of his own. In the third stanza, both men were slowing down as the fight was called off after Minikon landed to the back of Young’s head. In the fourth round, as the duo were pressed up against the ropes, Minikon sent Young through the ropes in a peculiar sequence that resulted in the fight being called off. Some fans took to twitter to share their opinion of the fight

Minikon stepped in for Blueface on a very short notice to fight Young when the rapper was refused a boxing licence in California. Minikon, who denied headbutting Young, argued that if he had more time to prepare for the bout, he would have done better. “I had two days to prepare, and I probably would have provided a greater show if I had more time to prepare,” he explained.
