Among the biggest shockers of this season has been the Dallas Mavericks‘ drastic drop in the Western Conference post-February. The Mavericks were placed 4th in the Western Conference when they acquired Star Point Guard Kyrie Irving from the Brooklyn Nets. The move was considered to be the acquisition of the missing piece to the Mavericks’ championship quest. But things haven’t panned out as per the fans’ expectations as the Mavericks have stumbled down to the 11th seed with a 37-42 record, and are currently out of play-in contention.
The Mavericks went 1-4 on their final road trip of the season and cannot reach 0.500 with three games remaining. The Mavericks have been 7-12 since the team acquired Kyrie Irving. in a blockbuster deal with the Nets. “I thought we were going to be up there,” Doncic said after Saturday’s loss to the Miami heat. “But we obviously aren’t, so it’s way different than I thought.” Even the Fans have been disappointed and have criticised their position from a contender to a tanker.
Irving has suited up on 19 occasions for the Mavericks and has lived up to his individual expectations after averaging 26.7 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists per game. The Mavericks were without Luka Doncic for a couple of games in March which was the beginning of their downfall. With three games remaining at home, only a miracle can take the Mavericks past the 10th seed and seal a play-in spot.

The Mavericks were Western Conference Finalists in 2022
Since winning the NBA championship in 2011, the Dallas Mavericks have had a mixed playoff history. The following years, they struggled to replicate their success and failed to advance past the first round of the playoffs. In 2015 and 2016, the Mavericks made the playoffs but were once again eliminated in the first round.
In the 2020 playoffs, the Mavericks faced the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round and were able to take a 2-1 series lead before ultimately losing in six games. The following year, in the 2021 playoffs, the Mavericks faced the Clippers once again and once again took a 2-1 series lead, but they were unable to close out the series and were eliminated in seven games.
However, the Mavericks had a run for the ages last year, making the Western Conference Finals for the first time in 11 years. Their most impressive achievement was getting past the Phoenix Suns in 7 games in the Semis.
