Chris Paul’s future with the Phoenix Suns is uncertain after a disappointing playoff run that saw him miss four games with a groin injury. The 38-year-old point guard has two more years on his contract, but only half of his $30.8 million salary for next season is guaranteed. The Suns have until June 28 to decide whether to keep him or let him go.

According to Zach Lowe of ESPN, the Los Angeles Clippers are one of the teams that could be interested in Paul if he becomes available. Lowe said on his podcast that the Clippers have “telegraphed” that they need a point guard to run their team.

Lots of teams that can use Chris Paul for a short-term contract that you can get out of after one year,” Lowe said on his podcast. “And I mention the aggregation thing only because of one team I would look at. And this is through no reporting. I have no inside sources. The Clippers have telegraphed that they think they need a point guard to run their team.

The Suns are reportedly “expected to explore” trade options involving Paul as they plan to build their offense around Kevin Durant and Devin Booker, who they acquired at the trade deadline. The Suns also fired head coach Monty Williams on Saturday, adding more turmoil to their situation.

Some Lakers fans are hoping that Paul joins the Clippers, believing that he would be more of a curse than a blessing for their rivals. They point to his age (36), his injury history and his hefty salary ($44.2 million next season if he opts in) as reasons why the Clippers should stay away from him.

They also argue that Paul would not mesh well with Leonard and Westbrook, who are both ball-dominant players. Here are some of the reactions from fans on NBA Twitter:

On paper, Paul seems like a perfect fit for the Clippers, who need a floor general who can orchestrate the offense and take pressure off Kawhi Leonard and Russell Westbrook. Westbrook joined the Clippers last summer in a blockbuster trade, but he has a player option for 2024 that he could opt out of this summer. If Westbrook walks, the Clippers would have a gaping hole at point guard that Paul could fill.

The Clippers have to weigh their options carefully this offseason as they try to recover from another disappointing playoff exit. Paul could be the missing piece that pushes them to the next level, or he could be another costly mistake that sinks them deeper into mediocrity.
