Russell Westbrook breaks all boundaries to establish himself as Triple-Double King

LeBron James scored 28 points, Russell Westbrook recorded a triple-double, and the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Orlando Magic 129-110 on Tuesday night to snap a four-game losing streak. Westbrook equalized Detlef Schrempf with a triple-double of 15 points, 13 assists, and 13 rebounds. Schrempf is the German player who recorded three triple-doubles coming off the bench and was named NBA Sixth Man of the Year in 1991 and 1992.

Even the most devoted NBA fan would hardly even be aware of this record, and it is in no way comparable to the 197 triple-doubles that Westbrook has compiled over his career, the most by any player in league history. However, the 34-year-old’s ability to put up such numbers as a reserve – and in a victory, no less – is a testament to how far he’s progressed in a role he hadn’t played before since his rookie year. Westbrook will definitely surpass Schrempf sooner or later, and as the season progresses, he could be able to aim for the Sixth Man title.

How content Westbrook is with his bench position is unknown. He dodged the topic by saying, “I’m a hooper. I can do anything, anytime, anywhere. Whatever’s asked of me is what I’ll do and I’ll continue doing that until further notice.” However, Westbrook’s reserve status was persuaded by Coach Darvin Ham, who is overjoyed to see the 2017 league MVP having such an influence. With his 28th appearance coming off the bench, Westbrook now at least appears to be settling into a routine.

The Los Angeles Lakers‘ victory today was crucial for the group’s spirit. They had a four-game losing streak before this victory. Even after a convincing victory, Skip Bayless, LeBron’s biggest critic, was unable to stay silent about the same. He discussed LBJ’s subpar three-point shooting on Twitter and brought Russell Westbrook in to the discussion too.

Unfortunately, the King was unable to discover his range this evening. This year, he and Russell Westbrook have struggled to make three-pointers. This season, Bron’s shooting percentage is 30.6%. He is still averaging 27.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 6.6 assists per game despite his subpar shooting from beyond the arc. The Lakers have lost a few games due to LBJ’s bad shooting, but that has always been after he himself put the team in a position to win.  LBJ would hope his shooting percentages improve, but with everything he has to do in his 20th season, it is a little doubtful.

LeBron James finished with 28 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. Off the bench, Russell Westbrook recorded a triple-double. The Magic were never in the game. The Lakers didn’t relinquish control, despite many attempts to cut the deficit. This enabled them to win by 19 points. With this victory, they improved their season record to 13-20.
