Shareef O’Neal is following his father’s footsteps and trying the best he can to make it big in the league. But they share completely different stories. As Shaquille O’Neal was drafted first overall by the Orlando Magic and his son just went undrafted in the 2022 NBA Draft. His status for Draft was also very confusing at first as many thought and even his name was on a list of players taking their name out of the draft. But later it was confirmed that he’s locked in and wants to be in the league. Shareef O’Neal though later revealed that it was because of him and Shaq bumping heads about it. As his dad wanted him to first complete his education but now it’s a done deal and he’s in the league but unfortunately didn’t get drafted by any team.

The story would have been very different from what it is, as Shareef O’Neal has that spirit and mentality it takes to be on that level. But his college career got ruined due to heart surgery and multiple injuries which limited him on the court and even had him sidelined for most of the games. He began his college career at UCLA (2018-2020) but missed the freshman year due to heart issues his return was also not that great as he was on the road to recovery. In February 2020 he announced his transfer to LSU where his dad has his jersey retired. But he wasn’t able to make that loud of a sound. As injuries again had him sidelined. He averaged 2.9 points and 2.1 rebounds per game coming off the bench.

So the reasons for him going undrafted are very obvious. Maybe Shaquille O’Neal knowing the league better knew it happening as he didn’t wanted his son to be a part of the process. But Shareef O’Neal is chasing it all and going behind his dream and there’s nothing wrong with it. After the draft, it was also revealed that he’s got a deal and will be playing in the NBA Summer League.

Shams Charania after the draft revealed that Shareef O’Neal will be playing for the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Summer League even though he wasn’t drafted but he has agreed to it. The Los Angeles Lakers are giving him and many other superstars’ kids a chance as their GM Rob Pelinka believes player development is necessary and he is very right with it. As you never know when a player outshines the rest of the crew if he puts in the correct work under the correct coach. So the Lakers are probably going ahead with an experiment they think if worked can help them a lot. The road for Shareef O’Neal is long, tough and rough but we hope he makes it soon and dominates the league just like his dad did.
