Skip Bayless has been an integral part of the sports television community for several years. The columnist started his career in the field of journalism and won several awards for covering investigative pieces in the1970s. He has tons of experience covering stories related to the NFL and has been associated with several top level sports news agencies over the years.
He is well-known for his time spent alongside another legend by the name of Stephen A. Smith on ESPN’s First Take. Bayless would later leave the talk show in June 2016. He currently serves his valuable knowledge on Fox Sports 1’s Undisputed featuring NFL star Shannon Sharpe.
Skip Bayless opens up about his childhood and the infamous Katie Bell
Skip Bayless, born John Edward Bayless II on December 4, 1951 grew up in the streets of Oklahoma City with his grandmother. On his show, he would admit to having deadbeat parents who were severe alcoholics. According to him, his mother never wished to have children and kept both his siblings as well as him with other relatives. He spoke about his grandmother housekeep who helped raise him as child.
Katie Bell Henderson was her name and Skip spent a lot of time with her as a child. He recalled attending Sunday’s church with her and the way she had brought him up. Another key point to highlight was that Katie Bell was a black woman. Bayless claimed that he never witness a spell of racism with her around his family. He also mentioned that he spent time with Henderson’s daughter who was about the same age as him. He claimed he had learnt a lot about discipline and racism from Henderson.
Skip Bayless’ wife Earnestine Sclafani helps him reconnect to his past
As Skip Bayless continued praising the works and love he received from the woman who raised, he highlighted a story when he connected to her through medium his wife, Earnestine Sclafani has suggested. “My wife sometimes says to me, ’you know it’s funny I always get the sense you’re actually more comfortable around black people than you around white people. I love everybody, I just do. I just being around people if we are talking sports, obviously.”
“My partners on TV, black partners…A couple years back. Earnestine had connected with a psychic. A black man in New York named Joseph,” he said emphasizing that his wife had asked to pay a visit to Joseph for enlightenment. “She said he’s God based, so he’ll pray to start to conversation and then you’ll go. You can ask him questions. We prayed for a minute and as we started, all of a sudden he interrupts and says, ‘Wait a minute…, somebody from the other side wants to join.’ He says, ‘it’s a black woman.’ I’m like, ‘a black women?’ and I said, ‘Katie Bell?’ He says, ‘It’s Katie Bell. And she wants you to know how proud she is of you.’ Katie Bell… please know how thankful I am of you… and how much I love you.”
