“There’s always smoke and mirrors” JJ Redick feels Nets would bring down hell upon them with Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant exit

Kyrie Irving might just the biggest factor that determines the Brooklyn Nets future in the league. His reliability has been a major concern over the few years even during his final year as a Boston Celtics guard. He was a big part of the Nets hopes of winning a title these past two season but Irving failed to live up to his promises.

Obviously, the Nets failed to complete their mission of winning a title this season. But the situation turned bitter after Kevin Durant’s former team, the Golden State Warriors won their fourth title and first ever since his departure. Brooklyn will have to make serious moves during the off season to help boost their chances of winning a championship.

Kyrie Irving was absent for a good portion of the season before being allowed to participate in home and road games. He played a total of 29 games averaging 27.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 5.8 assists on 46.9% shooting. The only option available for him at this point is a $36.5 million player extension which will be waived after the June 29th deadline making Kyrie a free agent.

Brooklyn could either choose to give in to the requests of their point guard and risk having an incomplete roster. Or the other choice would be to trade Irving to another team. Without him, the Nets do have Ben Simmons who will potentially make his debut next season. He is a defensive player of the year caliber player but lacks the scoring ability. They could solve this problem by acquiring an offensive back up via a trade involving the Los Angeles Lakers, LA Clippers or even New York Knicks.

JJ Reddick called the Nets situation a disaster

JJ Reddick believes that Brooklyn is a very risky situation with the future of the Durant-Kyrie Irving pairing. He said, “Well there’s always posturing, there’s always smoke in mirrors. People looking for leverage, players do it and games do it, agents do it. This is really nothing new to the NBA. And I do think that idea if Kyrie were to walk and Kevin Durant was to request a trade, that would be an absolute disaster. If you look at the history of them when they moved from New Jersey, the trade to the Celtics where they gave up draft picks for Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett and Jason Terry.”

“That didn’t work out. Then there were few years when they weren’t very good, they were rebuilding, they brought in Sean Marks and Kenny Atkinson. They built this culture and then they used that culture and that promise of a better future to leverage that into signing Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in a package deal. Then they trade away a lot of depth. Now three years in without a conference finals appearance, without an NBA finals appearance, you’re essentially starting over.”
