“I would like to not be called a…” Spencer Dinwiddie reveals alleged curse words used by Tony Brothers following a technical foul call

Tony Brothers and Spencer Dinwiddie

Spencer Dinwiddie has alleged that NBA official Tony Brothers referred to him as a “b—h ass motherf–ker” to his teammates after a technical foul. When Dinwiddie confronted Brothers to challenge a take foul call with 47.8 seconds left in the second quarter, Brothers slapped him with a technical foul. Dinwiddie admitted that while objecting, he may have used a swear word but his words were not offensive in any way.

Speaking to the media Dinwiddie said, “It was like ‘Hey, that wasn’t a take foul’ or ‘That wasn’t a f***ing take foul’ or something like that. It wasn’t anything personal. So, NBA, I would definitely like my money back and I would appreciate no fine at all for this monologue.”  As per the NBA guidelines, unless the league overturns the foul NBA players are penalized a set sum for every technical foul called on them which escalates as their season total rises. If a player accumulates 16 technical fouls over the season, the penalties climb all the way to a one-game suspension.

Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd also talked about the situation to the media calling it a sensitive topic. “That’s tough. I have to talk to Spencer,” Kidd said. He also said, “When you look at Tony and what he’s done in this league, he’s well-liked and also one of the best that we have. We’re going to see what happened here and talk to Spencer and find out exactly what happened. That’s a sensitive topic. We’ll see what happens.”

Curse words during the NBA games are not rare. Players are often heard or seen using swear words in the heat of the game. However, situations pertaining to officials using words of that nature are rarest of rare situations. Dinwiddie also added, “I’m not even mad at the language. Everybody has said things before when they are upset or feeling sensitive or hurt. That’s fine. Just say it to my face.

During the 2nd game of the 2019 NBA finals, Tony Brothers came under heavy heat for unnecessary foul calls against the Raptors. Longtime NBA center Kendrick Perkins also took a shot at the ref tweeting, “NBA no more Tony Brothers for the finals please! This is ridiculous. Nobody came to the game to watch him!” Former NBA forward had also tweeted “Tony Brothers make sure you ice your whistle at halftime … let these dudes play no one came to see you!”

Last season Tony Brothers again made a controversial call against Dallas superstar Luka Doncic giving him a technical for expressing his disappointment (which to many seemed like pleading for his call) after the referee clearly missed the call. Brothers’ technical foul call on Luka prevented him from appearing for the final game of the season.

Tony Brothers, a veteran official who earned his degree from Old Dominion University, has been officiating games in the league since the 1994–1995 season. Brothers have worked as an NBA staff official for 28 seasons, officiating 1,626 regular-season games, according to NBRA. Additionally, he has officiated 174 playoff games, including 15 NBA Finals games.
