For over a decade, the Golden State Warriors have enchanted the NBA world with their appealing style of basketball. And Steve Kerr has been the genius behind it all. In Kerr’s eight-plus seasons as Warriors coach, Golden State has experienced no shortage of success. Under his supervision, the Bay Area has been draped in gold as he has guided the franchise to four championships.
This season, though, the Warriors have encountered a seemingly endless number of challenges at every step. Since lifting the NBA gold last season, the Dubs have come a long way and have been fighting for every last win as they hope to avoid the play-in game for this year’s playoffs. Witnessing the current season, many have speculated that the franchise will look to hit the reset button. Steve Kerr, on the other hand, is optimistic that this will not be the case.
In a conversation with The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami, Kerr sounded certain that this won’t be the “Last Dance.” “Well, we don’t know what’s next,” the former human sniper said. “This is not the Last Dance. That was made clear in Chicago that that was going to be it. Phil (Jackson) was done, everybody’s contracts were up, and that was going to be it. That’s not the case here at all.“
Kerr further shed light on owner Joe Lacob’s commitment to improving the squad each year. “I know that Joe (Lacob) would love to keep this thing going. He’s been incredible in his financial commitment to keeping this team strong and relevant for a decade and he’s always committed to that. So, I think there’s a really good possibility that we keep things going here.“
The 57-year-old went on to reassure the Dub Nation that there is no need to speculate. He said that the team has bigger concerns to address right now, which is witnessing playoff basketball.
Notwithstanding Steve Kerr’s comments, the Warriors’ future remains uncertain
Steve Kerr’s words would have been music to the Warriors fans’ ears. While he thinks the dynasty he has built is far from done, uncertainties of the near future still loom.
To kick things off, general manager Bob Myers is currently in the final year of his contract. Moreover, he hasn’t been offered a contract extension yet. A key figure in building a winning culture, he has played a pivotal role in the team’s success over the last decade.
Following that, Draymond Green’s contract includes a player option that allows him to opt-out if the two parties cannot agree on an extension. For years, he has served as a swiss army knife, assisting the Warriors in several departments on the court. His influence on the Warriors, though, extends beyond the realm of hoops. His leadership has been critical to the Warriors becoming a dynasty.
The young talent on the team also hasn’t developed as originally believed it would. While Jordan Poole has emerged to be a star, James Wiseman turned out to be a pick that didn’t just pan out and was traded to the Detroit Pistons this season. Jonathan Kuminga is a player not named Poole who has shown shades of a promising future. Nonetheless, he is far from a sure bet for the squad moving ahead.
Several other uncertainties might pop up that might haunt the Warriors. Regardless, as Kerr mentioned, the team is focused on making the playoffs. In the midst of all the chaos, all the Warriors fans want is for their team to defend last season’s championship. It’ll intriguing to witness what the future has in store for the Warriors.
