Pele with other GOAT athletes
Pele was and will always be one of the greatest athletes that the world has ever seen. He laid the foundation for Brazillian soccer dominance on the global stage. Known as the Brazilian king of football, the great Pele took his last breath on Thursday. He was 82. Pele won a record three FIFA World Cups for his country and ruled football for a substantial time.
As many believe, the Brazilian legend was perhaps the most complete player in soccer history. He was so much more than just a player and above all one of the greatest human beings in the game. In his legendary speech on his farewell in 1977, Pele said everything passes but love. “Love is more important than what we can take in life. Everything passes,” said an emotional Pele in Giants Stadium.
In the age of legends like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, not many things would be known to the younger generation. A legend like Pele needs to remain alive in the hearts of billions that live and breathe today. Here are some of the legendary facts that many don’t know, and many might have forgotten about the World Champion.
Pele was voted the Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1999. He is 5th in all-time World Cup goal Scorers list with 12 goals. Perhaps many don’t know how famous Pele was; In 1967, a 48-hour ceasefire was declared in Nigeria so that Federal and Rebel troops could watch Pele play on his visit to Nigeria which was war-torn. When the question “How do you spell Pelé? arose, the Times of London declared, “G-O-D”.
