LeBron James, after he lost in the 2014 NBA Finals chose to return home to Cleveland. James’ homecoming was filled with tremendous success with the team reaching the 2016 NBA Final until they clash with the Warriors going down 3-1 in the series.
Tyronn Lue the then-head coach of the Cavaliers was the main reason LeBron James captured the Championship in 2016. Lue reportedly called out James for his lackluster performance in the first half of Game 7 prompting the forward to perform better in the remaining half.
Clippers Coach Ty Lue recounted his interaction with James in Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals. “You know Bron can get 20 in a half rolling out of bed but in the first half he wasn’t doing enough for me … halftime came and we go into the locker room and I said ‘Bron you got to be better bro … I don’t care about your stats, guard Draymond, shoot the ball and stop turning the ball over!'”
Ty Lue also added that his supporting staff D. Jones and James Jones choosing not to sympathize with James lit a fire in him to take over the second half. Lue also jokingly said to LeBron, “If we didn’t give you that speech at halftime we wouldn’t have won the game.” LeBron James eventually closed the series with a win in Game 7 to win the first Championship for Cleveland. Whether Lue’s tactic was feasible or not, James did drop a 27-point triple-double and 3 blocks with one of the blocks being the best chase-down blocks in NBA history.
Doris Burke’s version of the Ty Lue & LeBron James Game 7 story
NBA announcer and fan favorite analyst Doris Burke also recounted her own version of the Game 7 interaction. During her appearance in JJ Redick’s Old Man Of The Three Podcast, Burkes reminisces when Ty Lue urges LeBron to do more for him in the game.
According to Burkes, Lue was basically pleading with James in the huddle for one final push, nudging the star to take home the NBA Championship in front of him. “I remember being in the last huddle, and Tyronn Lue, in Game 7, is just pleading for more from LeBron James.” Burkes added, “And I was like, ‘How much do you expect LeBron James to give you dude?’”
The analyst also followed her statement by clearing the incident she had during this same Game 7. Burkes was accused by fans of being a LeBron supporter when the analyst choked up during the Cavalier’s celebration. She stated that she is just a huge admirer of the game and seeing James’ effort made her emotional.
