Victor Wembanyama ‘CONFIRMS’ he won’t declare for the 2023 NBA Draft
Haha, Gotcha. An April Fools Joke like the above could potentially send shockwaves across the NBA as multiple teams are “Tanking” for Victor Wembanyama. An anonymous NBA executive stated before the start of the 2022 season that teams would be willing to tank their season to acquire Wembanyama. He is undoubtedly one of the most hyped prospects in recent years.
Wembanyama is a member of the Metropolitans 92 of the LNB Pro A, France’s top-tier men’s professional basketball league. A parody Twitter handle named “buttcrack sports” pulled off their classic April Fools’ prank by reporting that Wembanyama would not be taking part in the 2023 NBA draft. Wembanyama responded to the tweet confirming his unavailability due to his commitments to Metropolitans 92, clearly passing the Vibe Check.
The prospective first pick has placed his side Metropolitans 92 in contention for the title, averaging 22.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game. With worthy potential competitors in Scoot Henderson and Chet Holmgren, the race for the 2023-24 Rookie of the Year will be one for the ages.
Victor Wembanyama has attracted praise from a large part of the NBA fraternity
Wembanyama drew attention from the US media during two exhibition games in October 2022 against the NBA G League Ignite. Scoot Henderson, the potential second-round pick in 2023, also competed in the games in Las Vegas.
Wembanyama posted ridiculously good stat lines in both games, scoring 37 points and five blocks in the first game and 36 points and 11 rebounds in the second. Owing to his aforementioned performances, the NBA agreed to broadcast Metropolitans 92 regular season games on its website.
Amongst the notable lines of praise Wembanyama has received so far, he stated that LeBron James’ compliment in February 2023 has been his favourite.“We are labelling like this unicorn thing—everybody’s been a unicorn over the last few years, But he’s more like an alien—no one has seen anyone as tall as he is but as fluid and as graceful as he is on the floor,” said James in February 2023.
