Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson have been playing together as starters for 12 years. Together they have been integral in creating the dynastical run for the Golden State Warriors. They have won four championships together and have been christened the ‘Splash Brothers’ for their all-out shooting from deep. But in the last game, something happened between them that seemed like their era was almost over.

Klay Thompson intentionally fouled Russell Westbrook with the Warriors down three with 38 seconds to go. Almost all of his teammates and head coach, Steve Kerr reacted negatively to the play. After all, Thompson should not have fouled with that much time on the clock. Thompson noticed these reactions on his way back to the Warriors’ half. In the middle Stephen Curry was trying to motivate him with words and with a low five. Thompson did not respond to either.

This intentional foul and the overall poor production from Thompson prompted Kerr to bench Thompson for tonight’s game against the Utah Jazz. This is the first time in 12 years, that Thompson will not be starting a game. It snaps his 699-game starting streak.

Thompson ignoring Curry’s efforts to motivate him was seen as a breakdown in their everlasting bond. Curry is still the de facto No. 1 option for the Warriors. Thompson knew he was losing out on his No. 2 position with these horrible plays. The 5-time All-Star knew the writing was on the wall.

Basketball fans knew the day would eventually come when Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson would have to hang up their boots. It seems the time has come. Today marks the first time in 12 years that both of them have not started a game together when they both are healthy. Basketball fans are left in a state of utter shock.
