Watch: Kyrie Irving brings an army of supporters with him outside Barclays Center

Kyrie Irving and his supporters outside the Barclays Center

Kyrie Irving played in the Brooklyn Nets‘ victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday after missing eight games and undergoing numerous amount of recuperation procedures. Several hours before his return game, Irving had a group of Black Hebrew Israelites assemble in his name to offer their support outside the Barclays Center.

Kyrie Irving was one of the most controversial athletes in the world a few weeks ago when he played in the NBA. Both critics and supporters were drawn to the divisive plot line featuring Irving and his promotion of an “antisemitic” movie. But things are beginning to change for Uncle Drew after he took all the necessary actions to resume his profession and apologized in public once more this weekend.

Stephen A. Smith and Jaylen Brown are just a couple of the NBA players who have backed Irving in the past. But more people than just those two men rallied behind him on Sunday night.

In solidarity with Israel United in Christ, a group of Black Hebrew Israelites gathered outside Barclays Center to welcome the Nets guard back. The group of individuals proceeded to show their support for Kyrie Irving, whose Islamic beliefs were disputed by the general sports media and the Nets squad in the wake of his antisemitic scandal, by donning purple hoodies and organizing chants outside the Nets’ arena.

They preached their message over a portable audio system as they stood near the top of the subway entrance with a large group. Other participants distributed information around a big portion of the arena on both sides of the Barclays Center.

This shows that Irving seems to be struggling to separate himself from the movie he was supporting, despite returning to the court on Sunday.

The Nets take care of things in Brooklyn against the Grizzlies in Kyrie Irving’s return

The Nets defeated the undermanned Memphis Grizzlies 127-115 on Sunday night thanks to a season-high 22 points from Ben Simmons and 14 points from Kyrie Irving upon his return from his suspension. With his 26 points, Kevin Durant has now scored at least 25 points in each of his 17 games this year.

Simmons scored 20 points in his first game with the 76ers since they played them in the 2021 playoffs, returning to the starting lineup and going 11 for 13 from the field while adding eight rebounds and five assists. As the Nets had 7 players in double digits, Yuta Watanabe led the team with 16 points, Joe Harris had 13, and Royce O’Neal had 12.

The Grizzlies, who were without All-Star Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, and Jaren Jackson Jr., were led by Dillon Brooks’ 31 points. However, they were only behind by three at the end of the third quarter when Brooklyn started the fourth with an 18-5 run. Memphis led 62-57 at the half thanks to Brooks’ 17 points, but Brooklyn tied a season-high with 39 points in the third quarter to take a 96-93 advantage into the fourth.

Memphis’ seven-game winning streak over the Nets was halted. Steven Adams scored 15 points, and grabbed 10 rebounds, but only made 1 of 8 free throw attempts.

What lies ahead for Kyrie Irving in Brooklyn?

The squad recently defeated the Trail Blazers, one of the strongest teams in the West, after beginning the season in October with just two victories. Ben Simmons, who started the game off the bench, had a fantastic game.

These recent games have demonstrated to the supporters and the Brooklyn Nets team that the big 3 still have it. With Simmons and Durant in charge against the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday night, the team maintained its momentum with Kyrie Irving back on the court.

Irving deserves praise for going above and above to make things right and for taking the required steps to rejoin the Nets.  Only time will tell if they are able to save this season, but Kyrie has undoubtedly given his club a strong foundation for future success. They might become the squad everyone once dreaded if they can stay healthy.
