Born on November 12, 1988, Russell Westbrook III is a professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association. Westbrook joined Oscar Robertson as the only other player in NBA history to average a triple-double for an entire season in 2017, the year he won the league MVP award. He is a nine-time NBA All-Star, a member of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team, and the 2016–17 NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP).
In addition, he has made the All-NBA Team nine times, has twice led the league in scoring (in 2014–15 and 2016–17), and has twice been named MVP of the NBA All-Star Game (in 2015 and 2016). The Seattle SuperSonics, who later moved to Oklahoma City and changed their name to the Thunder six days later, selected Westbrook with the fourth overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft. He joined the group on July 5, 2008.
Westbrook had dreams of attending UCLA and playing with his best friend, Khelcey Barrs III. At age 16, Barrs was already well-known for his basketball prowess and had been offered college scholarships. Unfortunately, Barrs passed away from an enlarged heart while playing pickup basketball in May 2004. Westbrook then seemed even more determined to succeed after Barrs passed away in honor of his best friend.

Throughout the season, Westbrook averaged 15.3 points, 5.3 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.3 steals. he came in fourth place in the 2008–09 NBA Rookie of the Year votes.
