Parole canceled for man convicted of killing Michael Jordan’s father

In July of 1993, James Jordan father of NBA great Michael Jordan was found dead after an alleged robbery that took place at the side of the US highway 74 in Lumberton, North Carolina. James’ body was found 11 days after he went missing, in a swamp located in South Carolina using dental records.

The two men accused of murdering Michael Jordan‘s father were named Larry M. Demery and Daniel A. Green who were both sentenced for life imprisonment. Both of the accused were of the age of 18 at the time of the incident and now three decades later, Demery was scheduled for a release on parole.

Larry Demery who pleaded guilty for first-degree murder, armed robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery in 1995 was sentence to life for 40+ years. In 2020, the State Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission announced that Demery was cleared for released based on an agreement which would make him participate in scholastic and vocational programs.

Demery was scheduled to be released in 2023 prior to being shifted a year earlier. The convicted man who is now 46 years old and has 19 other charges under his name since 2001 which also includes a charge for possession of substance.

As stated by Associate Press, the state had suddenly cancelled the scheduled parole without any given reason effective immediately. State Department of Public Safety spokesman, Greg Thomas had said the possibility of immediate cancellation of the agreement exists if a prisoner were not abiding to the rules.

Michael Jordan, who was at that time on pace of becoming the player we all know as the greatest of all time personally struggled to cope with his father’s death which further led to his early retirement in 1993. NBA fans were left shocked but understood the plight Jordan would have been in.

Jordan would then return from his hiatus a season later only to end up three-peating during his run with Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman and the rest of the Chicago Bulls team. He was also named as league MVP for the fourth and fifth time in his career.

Jordan had retired thrice from the NBA and after his father’s death he chose to join the Chicago White Sox Baseball team in the AA minor division. Jordan grew up playing baseball and it was not until later in his life he picked up a basketball. He retired again in 1998 and resigned with the league joining the Washington Wizards in 2001. He officially hung up his jersey in 2003.
