On January 10, the Bank of America Stadium in Carolina is set to bear witness to the showdown of two teams that traveled very different paths to the playoffs. The Los Angeles Rams qualified for postseason football for the third straight season with two games to spare, while the Carolina Panthers had to rely on rivals, the Atlanta Falcons, to gain entry.

Carolina made playoff qualification tricky after losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the final day of the season. Despite sharing the same record, the Bucs had the advantage due to their head-to-head record.

The Panthers needed the Falcons to defeat the Saints to ensure qualification. They hung on to pick up a two-point victory, much to the dismay of Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield. Remarkably, all three teams, the Panthers, Buccaneers, and Falcons, finished 8-9. Regardless, the Panthers are set to play their first postseason game since losing to the Saints in the 2017 wildcard round.

The Rams didn’t have to bear such a headache. Matthew Stafford and Sean McVay had already wrapped the hard part of the job a couple of weeks earlier. However, the division title was still within reach, which slipped away by losing to the eventual champions and NFC top seed, the Seattle Seahawks, and then to the Falcons in consecutive weeks.

It needed a final-day victory over the Cardinals to lock the fifth seed and the second-place finish in the NFC West. The San Francisco 49ers gave them a boost by losing to the Seahawks in Week 18. The Panthers are 14-10 all-time against the Rams. Carolina holds a 7-5 record both at home and on the road against the Rams, with one of those victories coming in a 2003 playoff game.

The Rams lost in Carolina in week 13. Stafford threw two picks after going eight games without a single one. The Panthers quarterback, Bryce Young, completed 15 passes for 206 yards and threw 3 touchdown passes. Chuba Hubbard and Rico Dowdle had 37 combined touches on the ball for 170+ scrimmage yards and one score. Jalen Coker and Tetairoa McMillan caught one TD pass each.

Why can the Panthers win?

Bryce Young has been a hit-and-miss. When he plays well, Young seems like a franchise quarterback, but on a bad day, he will throw a couple of picks and lose the game for Carolina. Young racked up his first 3000-yard season on 304 completions, threw 23 touchdowns, and had 11 picks.

McMillan became the first Panther rookie to record 1000 yards in the NFL era. He finished with 70 receptions for 1014 yards and scored 7 touchdowns. Running back Rico Dowdle became the first undrafted running back to go back-to-back seasons with 1000 rushing yards (1076 yards on the ground and 1560 scrimmage yards) and 7 total touchdowns.
